Hi, hope one of you kind people would point me in the right direction.

I have a rather old Garmin nuvi 250 sat nav which covers UK & europe. Needless to say over the years I have lost all instructions, booklet etc and it now needs to be updated. Is there a free way to update it or do I have to go through Garmin?

Thank you,

Pj

Ps. Garmin site wants £74.99 - I think it would be cheaper to buy a new sat nat at that price

Just found some instructions on You Tube - is this safe?

You can get the manual here

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00656-00

    What was the £74:99 for?
  • A google for 'garmin map update' gives you http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-N%C3%BCmaps-European-Lifetime-Updates/dp/B001PKTDMU which says the RRP is £74.99 so i'm presuming it's that you've seen the price for. That isn't an update price but a full Europe map update until the end of time, you just need the current update which should be a lot cheaper from Garmin, although I can't check as they want you to plug the sat nav in
  • Hey pjran. I was in the same place two weeks ago. I got my nuvi hooked up to computer, got it registered and then looked for updates. I had to upload Garmin Lifetime updater (which checks for updates). I was told there were new maps available and I went for the £75 option for 4 updates per year and UK and Europe. BEWARE - what it didn't indicate after I had spent what seemed like ages downloading the updated maps etc was that the whole of UK and Europe would NOT fit onto my machine! It wouldn't even take UK and France, so I ended up only being able to have updated UK and not France (which is what I wanted in the first place as we were driving through there for hols). I looked afterwards and saw that you can buy various uptodate maps on those tiny SD card thingies, so this was probably how I should have done it (ain't hindsight a wonderful thing!).

    Hope this helps.

You need to investigate Garmin City Navigator maps
GMAPPROM.IMG for the Primary mapset or GMAPSUPP.IMG for the second.
They are published in April so you would be looking for 2011 ones for your area or for any location you are visiting.

I used my Nuvi (British/Europe default) GPS in the US this summer using a sd card and it worked a treat.

Thanks for all your replies, I really appreciate you taking the time to post.

I've noted on other posts that no one says thankyou :T.
