wheelchair accesories

  • Have you tried other red cross centres? I've borrowed a wheelchair several times from red cross in the past and never had problem getting one. They did want to see a letter from a medical profession but as I was waiting for a powerchair I just provided that as evidence. Perhaps your GP or the hospital could put something in writing. In terms of availability from red cross - it is worth asking a number of centres. In my area there is many centres relatively near (within 20 min drive) and I often had to call around a few before there was one available. They all seemed to have different rules too, e.g. some will reserve a chair, some wont, some need written evidence, some don't want to see it even if I have it with me, etc. I doubt you will get a leg raiser thing via red cross though.

As you said, Halfords is an option. They have good deals on at the moment as they are getting rid of disability stock. There is always ebay, freecycle or gumtree?

I hope your son has a speedy recovery.
  • I think its so nice to hear of someone wanting to go to school for a change & all credit to you and your son for trying to get him there! Hope you get something worked out.
  • just a thought have you asked on your local freecycle if someone has one you could borrow?

Although i agree that using crutches is better, what i don't agree is expecting him to walk to school like that...

an hour and a half if you are not used to it is going to wear him out, it's ok if you have many years experiance of it.

Yes 17 years old males should be fit and healthy, but this is ridiculous.

OP can the school let him do work from home for a short while?
until you can get a chair sorted

The hour and a half is an estimate of his current speed of crutching, they live close to the school as posted above, the only change I made when my daughter broke her foot was to drive her the short distance to school (it was at our old house) and her school wasnt disabled friendly at all, she was also just 6 weeks out of hospital from pneumonia (and like jojos daughter she was 6 stones wet through at 5" 4) so she was weak and got tired very, very quickly so she went to bed when she got home from school every day though she just had a knee length cast and elbow crutches though the OPs son could have the same set up as we dont know where the break is.

The OP has posted just a wheelchair in no good, leg raisers are rare in loan chairs because hospitals routinely supply them to people that absolutly need them and they are to expensive in comparison to foot rests, I only have mine due to odeama (sp) and the NE wheelchair service ordered mine especially to fit both my wheelchairs.

Broken legs are run of the mill everyday occurances, they are short lived and rarely cause longterm problems today, my (1st I should make it clear, not my current) husbands legs differ in length now due to his breaks but he broke both legs, they were very severe and his left leg was a very unusual type of spiral fracture that was missed for 36 hours but he dosnt even limp anymore, that went after a year or so when all the metal work was removed (under local , he swore never to have another anistetic in his life as they made him so ill)
