Dont forget Tesco still have the wholewheat penne at 22p, picked up some more today.

Nope. Must be a Northern Ireland thing or maybe just my local Tesco. I have looked repeatedly for this but they just don't stock it and it's not sold out as no spaces on shelves or labels. Grrr!

  • Personally to me pasta is pasta and I'll eat whatever is the best priced when I need it. A little tip I picked up from some friends who are chefs is to cook the pasta in a stock cube for added flavour.
  • Anyone who is on the look out for rice for a change, Asda value rice is rolled back to 35p a 1kg bag from 40p, i buy this all the time and think its fine, i make risotto and everything with it....
    ADOPT DONT SHOP......🐕🐕🐕🐕
  • I also find the Tesco value one is quite thick and stodgy, Morrisons value pasta twists are much better and usually cheaper as the Tesco prices are always going up and down.

Sainsbobs value pasta was 25p today, up from 18p last month.

I agree the morrisons is the best quality, but OH like the sainsburys one for his pasta salads.

IMHO although I've regularly eaten value pasta, Italian brands such as De Cecco (turquoise and yellow packets) or Napolina taste best. If you wanted something really special then the Carluccios ones are excellent. For day to day use, my former Italian flat mates used to choose Buitoni.

When value pasta is smothered in tomato sauce and loads of cheese it will taste good enough for a casual dinner but if you were to compare a value one and premium side by side just drizzled with olive oil and quick grind of salt, there'd be no competition!!

Great post, agree with everything you say, except one point.
Napolina is as Italian as Branston Pickle and Batchelor Soup, don't get fooled....

There is no equivalent Napolina brand sold anywhere in Italy, and the quality is nothing like proper Italian food. The name and company blurb are meant to give you the impression the it's a genuine italian brand.

If you want the best I agree about De Cecco and Buitoni for pasta, also Cirio for tinned tomatoes and passata, but Napolina is a rip off, or if you are not bothered about quality then own brands/value brands, why not. But Napolina is just bad quality for the price.

One of the best supermarkets for decent Italian stuff is Lidl, their Panettone and Pandoro are better than most other brands sold in UK.
Lidl sell the same stuff in the UK and in Italy, so you get the real deal (e.g. mozzarella is also good).
If you want to make sure you buy the real deal at Lidl check the ingredients, if they include the language of the country the food comes from, it means it's also sold there.
