Popular places for that kind of roadtrip include Yosemite NP and the Pacific Coast Highway between SF and San Diego, but there are a huge number of possible suggestions - without knowing what kind of things you enjoy, ie outdoorsy/hiking/surfing or cities/sightseeing etc, it is very difficult to narrow these down.

Las Vegas will be extremely hot in August, anywhere on the coastal side of the mountains will be a more pleasant temperature.

Flying in and out of different airports can give a more flexible itinerary.

eg fly into LV, drive to SF via Yosemite, then down PCH with various stops, flying home from LA or SD

There is alot of info on this thread - have a look at the links on the first page
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Consider a flight from Vegas to/through the canyon, as it's a long drive, particularly as you'll be heading in the opposite direction.

Drive through Death Valley - it's spectacular (seriously), then up through the Tioga pass into Yosemite, then onto SF. Book accomodation in Yosemite as far ahead as possible, we tried booking in January for June and there was nothing! We stayed in El Portal just outside the park (which was actually a good location).

There's good ghost town, Bodie, on the way.

In SF if you want to visit Alcatraz it's now best to book in advance rather than just turn up.
  • Fly to SFO..stay a couple of days, pick up hire car..head down pacific coast highway..make a stop half way for an overnight. Suggest staying outside LA in Santa Monica. LA is just a great big freeway...and ermm...a great big city..nothing much to see. Stay a couple of days in Santa Monica and take an all day tour into LA picked up from your hotel. Exit Santa monica drive I15 >I 40 through Mojave.. through all those towns mentioned on Route 66..stopover in Williams..maybe drive into Flagstaff... north to Grand Canyon or take the GC railway out of Williams..then Las Vegas..i recommend the Bellagio...then north to Yosemite...skirt round the northern part of CA stopping off in wine country..Calistoga/Napa...over the Bay bridge calling in at the Presidio..then back to SFO
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

If you want somewhere extremely scenic that has plenty of decent walks available then I highly recommend Sedona.

The local accomodation is fairly expensive but there are plenty of cheaper places available within a few miles drive, and the crowds will be far smaller than at the Grand canyon.
