Old and slow Celeron processor, and woefully inadequate RAM (only 1GB).
Any modern spec, however low, will enable you to surf the web, but it's really not very good value.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I am looking for a cheapish one as an xmas present for my 7 year old son.
  • There's some excellent deals in both Tesco and sainsburys at the moment. Have you looked there?

Will check them out now, had one in the basket from Sainsburys for £170 a couple of weeks ago but it went oos as I tried to order it.

Is 2gb ram ok? and is there anything else I should particularly look out for or avoid?

    Thanks

Umm yes very low on RAM my friend. I picked up a Acer for only £300 with 4GB of ram...... over the years i've found that its the RAM your run out of the quickest.

H's right, its the Service Packs that make the systems resource hungry.

One can often find refurbed laptops at PCWorld with full guarantees - although at the moment (schools/uni starting etc) they don't have anything particularly good - worth keeping an eye open though - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/refurbished-laptops/703_7366_70436_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html

TBH, 2Gb of RAM is still minimal.
I've just found one for my DD with 6GB of RAM, an i3, 750Gb Hard drive etc at under £400. Its a Toshiba Satellite.
You just need to be a bit patient and know whats good so when you see it you can buy asap.
Good Luck and keep monitoring other peoples posts as sometimes that can lead you to what YOU are looking for.
    Good Luck.
