some small couriers wont clear parcels so you would get a letter from HMRC telling you that a parcel in your name is at **** holding centre/port and requires *** import duty paid to have this released, so you pay this, what then, you need to contact a courier to go and collect this which will cost you more money. this is why couriers just pay the duty and then invoice you for this most of the time after delivering the goods.

i remember last year i ordered some boots from a well know brand in australia and these were stopped. the courier DHL at the called me to tell me they had the goods, but had to pay import duty, so could i pay this to them and then they would deliver the boots. i asked them if the goods were at my local depot and they said yes, so i asked them to email me over a confirmation if this payment due etc. and as i was visiting a wholesaler 2 doors away from their deport the following day i would just call in and pay them and collect the goods, which they agreed

OK, thanks, I see your point. I was just rather unhappy, as many would be, to get a letter saying you owe someone a completely unexpected £22, well after everything else regarding it wad finished.

    Thanks everone for your help

Its not unexpected, YOU chose to import goods without making yourself familiar with what could happen. Put this another way, in the intervening weeks, why didn't you contact the courier to pay the import charges? Or ask whether any were due?

When I've had this happen a letter from UPS with an invoice for the Tax was attached to the letter asking me to arrange payment. I've never let it get to this long before making the payment so don't know if the letter you have received is a standard follow up or not.

    Just before you pay.....

Check the actual levels of tax to be paid on the goods.

You are required to pay the tax, not necessarily UPS's admin fees. The tax may be less.

Royal Mail add an £8 admin fee - and they withhold the goods until the tax AND admin fee are paid.

You are liable for the Admin fee, UPS completed delivery - the only exception to paying the fee would be if you had personally cleared the package yourself.
