baby bottle question

Hi all,
I've just started adding some rice cereal to one of my LO's feeds and the other day bought a new bottle with the appropriate teat. It was a different brand from what I normally use (which is avent, we're on 3 at the mo - but decided to try born free cos it's BPA free)
I think LO sucked normally on it at first, got a lot more than he expected, coughed and spluttered at first, dribbled a lot of it out. Now he sort of chews on the teat. There was a fair amount dribbling out, but most of it went in.
He was definitely enjoying it and kept grabbing the bottle to put in his mouth.
So my question is - should I stick to this bottle? Is it normal that it might take some getting used to as the opening is bigger? Or should I try the avent teats for this?
Btw, LO is 6.5 months old, breastfed mostly from the breast and sometimes expressed milk from a bottle and has never had any trouble with a bottle.

You are advised not to add stuff to bottles now as it increases the choking risk.. you would be better mixing it with his mik and giving him it from a spoonLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

Probably little one just not used to the faster flow
Have you tried feeding the rice cereal out a bowl with a spoon instead and just leave the bottles for milk ?
EDIT : x posted

I breastfed my girl til six months and then used teats stage one.. never bothered to change it as it seemed to suffice... maybe try go back to the other brand you have and see if the chewing stops?0

You can get variflow teats designed for thicker feeds.
But the standard advice today is that putting rice in a bottle is the equal to child abuse, it will choke and your a bad mum.

Agree with ^^ posters.Personally I'd spoon feed any rice and not add it in bottles.Slightly mad mummy to four kidlets aged 4 months,6,7 and 8

The standard advice is not to add anything to bottles as others have said.
BUT my youngest had severe reflux and I was advised by his paediatrician to add thickening agents to his milk to help it stay down. Initially, we used a thickening powder, and then the doctor told us we could use powdered baby rice to make it the same consistency.
So if your baby is old enough for solids, and if you never ever leave the baby alone with a bottle so are always there in case he chokes, then you could make your own mind up on what to do for the best. And he's probably old enough to try out different types of bottles and cups and likely to get used to a different one quickly, assuming again he's never left alone with one so can't choke without someone being there to intervene.
I'm not on net mums by the way

Oh my
please dont add anything to baby formula. Sometimes i like to imagine that im living on the breadline as a single mum with 3 children to feed and clothe, bills to pay and very little time to myself........ then i wake up and realise im a princess with prince charming by my side and a lovely white castle........ oh wait

Tee hee was thinking the exact same thing!!
To the OP: I'll second the other posts highlighting the current guidelines re not adding anything other than milk to bottles - but I guess you get that now!? If you were already aware this was a no-no and had simply made an informed choice to ignore the guidelines (which you're perfecttly entitled to you know!!) then just make sure you are careful and, most importantly, don't let on to your health visitor...0
