Debit Card payment taken from my bank account to Wonga but I have never used them!

Today my brother discovered a debit card payment of over £300 taken from his bank account to Wonga.com. He has never used them, is not in any debt, hasnt used any loan companies and has even checked with his wife who confirms the same.
His bank (Santander) are saying that he needs to contact Wonga and if no joy within 30 days they will then step in. Is this correct? This sounds wrong to me. I left Santander after 2 appalling episodes of service and would never go back, so I am dubious about the advice they have given.
Either way he just spoke to Wonga and they say they have no record of the transaction and to contact the police. I have advised my brother to call the bank first, tell them he suspects Fraud, then the police for a crime reference number, then to call the bank back again.
Any more advice over and above this appreciated, especially over who is responsible as he hasnt given anyone his card details to allow this to have happened.
Many thanks.

If he is saying the transaction has not been authorised, Santander are responsible for reimbursing the amount and starting a fraud investigation.
I would suggest he checks with anybody else who had potential to access his card (e.g. kids in their teens / early twenties) who may have set up this arrangement without his knowledge.0 -
Go back to the bank and start their complaints procedure. Tell them you have not authorised any payments to Wonga and that they must sort it out.
Put your complaint in writing and mark your letter "Complaint" both on the envelope and at the top of the letter. If they do not sort this out go to the financial ombudsman0 -
he needs to contact wonga. i deal with type of fraud all the time. wonga will in all likelihood have a different name for the account and a third party has just used your brothers debit card detail. Wonga will be able to sort this out very quickly (they spend all day doing so). if there is no joy from wonga or it is registered in your brothers name than he will need to contact santander to deal with. i would recommend getting a new card and account number for him anyway as his has now been clearly compromised. good luck.0

I don't think he should go near Wonga. His bank should sort it0 -
I shouldn't be surprised that Santander are talking total b*llocks.
Unauthorised transactions are their responsibility. Your brother needs to reiterate this to them until they sort it, failing that a formal complaint.
Quite why he'd have to make a complaint for something other banks do quite competently, I have no idea.urs sinserly,
