  • Sure,no problem Tubie,I know what you mean. :)

I'll briefly give you my case.I applied for a Tesco credit card a couple of weeks ago and was turned down much to my disappointment.I've been a Tesco shopper and clubcard holder for years but I'm sure that counts for nothing.

I've been at the same address and on the electoral roll for 11 years,no bad debts,no bad payment record, haven't applied for a card for 4 years and though unemployed my income is £7000 a year which is above their required threshold of £5000.I suspect it's purely the unemployment which did for me.

What sticks in my craw is that a few years ago the fella next door to me who was also unemployed and only living there a year got a Capital One card (I was turned down around the same time by that company). He maxed the card out with no intention of paying a penny back and then disappeared to who knows where or what other scam.

Try and work that one out! :D To say the rating system is unfair is something of an understatement...

tubie22. You say you already have a contract mobile phone and a storecard so you are not turned down for everything.

You also have a debit card as you say in your OP that your debit card was 'declined for the credit check' when you were trying to get a new mobile phone contract. Was the bank account associated with this debit card at the same address as you gave them in the mobile phone shop? They were presumably trying to use the debit card as part of the credit check to verify your address. If the bank account has a Belfast address and you gave them a London address then this would have been a serious problem as would your being on the electoral at a different address to the one provided.

If this was an expensive type of phone on a high tariff, a higher than usual credit rating may have been required especially as you already have an existing contract.

As for the Capital One card. did you say on the applicaton were unemployed or in only part-time employment? I believe any problems you are having are a result of your age, lack of any real credit history beyond a bank account, a mobile phone contract and a storecard plus lack of stable employment and probably a low or irregular income. You may also be applying for credit products inappropriate to your circumstances.

As to your boyfirend, he appears to have more employment stability than you (you say he kept a job for a year and a half). If this was a permanat job, he may have a higher income than you. He already has a credit card and a mobile phone contract and (presumably) has no missed payments. You however, are not making any payments to the storecard any more and have only a mobile phone contract. I think he is just that little bit more attractive to lenders and maybe he is better than you at presenting himself as lenders want to see him on applications.
