Can i apply for a second student loan?

Options
Hi all, i will finish my degree in June 2007 (Studying TV Production) currently have my fee's paid for my my LEA (Mother earns less than £15k per year) and have full student loan.

I want to totally switch careers and go into Trading Standards, which i really need to do a 1 year Post Graduate Diploma in Trading Standards in Manchester.

Is it possible to apply for a second loan, and as i'm still under 25 will fees still be paid by my LEA?

Thanks, Sam

  • Where I live we get a full five years of education paid for for us, I dont think it would count as a 'second' student loan, it would just count as you continuing on your other one?

The rules are different for post grad courses, best to get in touch with your LEA directly
  • Oops sorry didnt read properly that it was post grad :)

  • I'm pretty sure that you can get a loan so long as it isn't another undergraduate degree that you're applying for, because my old teacher was doing a masters and got a loan. It might be a different system/type of loan though, ie not through the SLC.

You can get a career development loan. But these aren't the lower interest rates that the SLC charge and aren't repaid in the same way. The SLC will cover fees for one degree and that's it. You'll have to pay fees for a masters yourself and find your own money from somewhere unfortunately
  • There is no statutory funding for a postgraduate course, so as the previous poster says, you need to find your fees and your living costs. You should ask the department first of all about any bursaries or scholarships that may be available. Otherwise, you will be looking at a career development loan, if your course fits the criteria, or a commercial loan.

You could work for a couple of years and save up or you could see if you could do the course part time and have a part time job.

Nope - LEAs do not provide funding for postgraduate education...

Try sitting down with a copy of the EGAS handbook and fire off some letters to suitable charities...
