You can still buy old fashioned chip pans...Google it and you'll get hits for Argos and Tesco ones. I don't have one atm but sometimes think of getting another. Yeah, deep fried is not healthy but there are plenty of ready meals and such out there that are just as bad. And I remember being told that a tube of Pringles had more fat than deep fried batterd fish from the chippy, plus a darned sight less by way of nutrients.
    Val.
  • My nana makes them and basically she pealed and sliced potatos then deep fried them. If you had an electric deep fat fryer that would work

  • Oooooh! Scallops. They remind me of my Grandad, he used to make them just chopping the potato into large round slices and then deep frying them. We used to have them with plenty of salt and vinegar and mucky white bread and butter! :D I liked the ones best that had stuck together and have bits that were still white on them iykwim!

A pub I used to live near used to put them on every Tuesday free of charge for the locals, but they were done in batter.

I hope you managed to get them exactly how you wanted - there's nothing like fancying something you haven't had for ages. Although usually I eat it every day for a week once I've rediscovered it then end up not liking it for a while!

Those cooked in a shallow pan with oil & butter are Saute Potatoes. :D

  • One thing that's probably worth noting is the smell that comes from chip pans. We bought one of the plug in DeLonghi ones when a friend made us some samosas (any excuse to get a deep fat fryer after years of denial!) and we didn't get rid of the smell of the fat for days. We have an extractor hood now, if you have one it's worth sticking it on or opening all the windows! I have even been tempted to get the fat fryer out in the garden on an extension lead it was so bad before :o

They still do the *best ever* chips though. :D
