been scammed on ebay - please help

Options
Im not 100% sure if this has been posted in the correct place so please feel free to move.

Well basically ive been selling a few bits on ebay recently to go towards buying christmas presents so decided to look and see how much stamps were to buy on ebay and i could get a book of 100 for £39 instead of £46 so was going to go ahead and do this then i saw someone selling books of 100 first class stamps for £20 brand new etc, he had 100 for sale and had already sold 25 books so had 75 left, he had only just listed the sets and they were flying out hence the cheap price. Immediatley i though this could be abit dodgy so emailed the chap for reassurance this was real and he got back to me straight away telling me that he was clearing out stock and would provide a tracking number etc... i then cheekily asked him if i bought all the remaining stock if he could do a deal as i though i could make a nice little profit here but he said that was as cheap as he could go, so im the mean time there still selling quickly. I decided to buy 55 books (£1,155) as this was pretty much every penny in my bank and i though it would be a quick turn around and i could make several hundred pound profit if i sold them on, on ebay.

Anyway so i paid straight away and he told me he would get them in the post and within a few hours he'd sold them all. Then yesterday i get the email of ebay to say the item was been removed and paypal are investigating fraud etc and will get back to me, ive been on the phone to paypal and ive found out it was a man scamming from zinbabwe and not a man called scott from nottingham, so here i am panicking like mad with no money and really dont know what to do? Paypal say there are investigating and will get back to me asap but what is the likelyhood of me getting my money back, its a heck of alot of money £1,155, im only 19 working 28 hours a week in a supermarket and payday is another 3 weeks off and ive got not much going spare till something gets sorted out, does anyone how quick paypal sort these situations out? Theres going to be quite a few people in the same situation as me he sold them all :(:(

Hope someone can help me and make me feel abit better

thankyou

Checkout paypal and ebays buyer protection policies -- I think you will be covered here, although bearing in mind the amount it will take a while. Login to your PayPal acc --> click the transaction --> on this page it usually has a link to the buyer protection policies and should tell you whether you are eligible or not.

That is though some crazy money to spend on stamps. If you sending out alot, maybe get a franking machine which will cost about £15/month and get you savings. Second class mail is usually just as quick as first class though tbh, so there's a saving there for you.

Otherwise contact royalmail as if you send out alot of first/second class (which includes small packet service) you should qualify for savings. See about the OBA service also. More
  • Firstly if you have been notified by paypal that it is fraudulent then this means that the money may be held with paypal.

Contact Paypal by phone and enquire about the holding if any.

As it is fraud you need to contact your bank, I am thinking visa do chargeback so this may be a route you might have to take.

If you get the money back from paypal, you should not try a chargeback as to accept 2 x the money is fraud.
  • Im 100% not thinking of comitting fraud, i just want my money back, ive had a look on the buyer protection page which indicates i will get the money back as it was a physical good i bought off ebay. I will give a them a ring to find out. thankyou for your help :)

and try to be conned so easily next time. if it an amazing deal it tends to be a dodgy deal. get an address from a vendor and check the name and address match.

AS long as you paid via paypal for named goods you will be fine. You will probably have to wait a full 7 days from payment to open a full INR claim (unless they allow you to open it quickly as listing has been withdrawn). Then it takes another 10 days after that for your refund to be processed- and a day or two longer for the refund to go back to your card.

Keep on top of this though, make sure you open a full chargeback as soon as you can, don't let the time frame slip.

Incidentally there is an ebay board (see my sig) if you need any assistance in the future.

Visa may not support the claim anyway. Afterall by making payment via PayPal you are in effect adding to money to your paypal account then transferring that to the seller -- to the transaction is between You and Paypal, not you and the seller - and the problem here is not with paypal.

Also when a chargeback is filed, the bank will attempt to get the money back from the sellers merchant account, this case paypals so they would know about the chargeback so it would be very highly unlikely to get a double payout.

Thanks, i will use the ebay board in future :)

Ive opened the dispute already but cant escalate it to a claim till 14th september but will be doing so straight away.

I did pay for named goods via paypal so i really hope i am ok.

... Im not intrested in a double payout at all, just my orignal money back.
