Ebay messages

Hi all, I was just wondering if there was any way of seeing if someone has read your message that you sent to them over ebay?

I am asking as I purchased a dress yesterday around 12pm and paid straight away. I sent the seller a quickie email asking when they would be able to post as I really want to wear this dress next friday (16th). I have yet to hear from them, I know that it was only yesterday afternoon so maybe I need to give them more time but as someone who has also sold on ebay I find it very strange that someone would not be checking their ebay when they know exactly when their auction will be finishing.

Do you think it may be worth asking for 1st class post and paying that bit extra to get it here sooner or do you think there is no point as sometimes 2nd class mail gets here just as quick?

  • Sadly some people don't read their messages straight away (in the same way that some people bid in the last five minutes then don't pay for 3 days ;))

I'd give them a bit longer, you never know they might be at the post office as we speak.

After this morning they won't be able to post till Monday anyway (yes, before anyone jumps on me, I know some post offices are open in the afternoon, but generally)

Wait till tomorrow and try again. You could offer to pay 1st but as you've already paid it might be a hassle.

    Have a nice time Friday!
  • Thankyou for your quick reply graspthenettle. I thought I was being a bit hasty and only seeing it from my point of view as a previous seller, it's just so tempting to sit here and obsess over it because it's something I really want and soon :-)

Oh and thanks am sure it will be a great night out friday; its a charity boat cruise which is such a good way to get lots of money, just get everyone drunk.

They may not read their messages, I found one the other day in my email account, that I hadn't noticed amongst all the rubbish that arrives. I rarely check my messages in ebay, unless I'm waiting for a response to something.
It could be that they'll just post it.

True I never thought of that, I guess because my ebay messages always show up in my hotmail account which I check all the time but didn't realise some don't get through.

Just a quick thought though, as a seller is it not polite to send a quick email either after auction has ended or afetr you have posted just to keep the buyer updated; I know I do but then again everyone is different.

I send an invoice if the item's not already been paid for, unless I'm at the computer when it finishes.
I then send a message when I get back from the post office to say thanks, just posted etc. I also mark as despached & leave FB & say on that, posted today.
I get very few emails direct from a seller to say something's been posted.
I paid for something at 2am the other other morning & the seller marked it despatched straight away, unless she puts straight in the post box it can't have been posted in the middle of the night.
  • hermum you sound like the kind of seller I would love to buy from because I just need to be kept updated; you're not selling any dresses are you hehe ;-)
I tend to send messages rather than invoices as I am still fairly new to it all so I am generally more comfortable with messaging.
How do see if something has been despatched? or is this only available for business sellers? I have bought from a private seller this time.

I invoice but try not to do it straight away as it seems a bit 'grasping' :)

When paid I send a thank you for buying from me and for the payment email and tell that I will contact when I have posted. When I have posted I send another email to confirm and include a little msge along with some details of what sort of box to look out for etc. :)

You can tell if an item has been despatched by looking at myebay purchase history. There will be a little parcel lit up next to your item. You should also receive an automated email from ebay telling you that it has been despatched. However, neither of those will apply if the seller doesn't click on 'item despatched' which they don't always do.

What despatch time was the seller stating, and I notice you mention that you were considering paying extra for 1st class post, so does that mean the auction only offered 2nd class?

I'm coming across more and more private sellers now with 3 or 4 day despatch times and it is always worth checking before you bid if the seller is likely to be posting quickly or not. default on ebay is 2 working days, so something sent Tuesday or Wednesday 2nd class has only a fair chance of arriving in time for Friday.
