how do you get bad stuff off credit file!

Hi

I have a pretty good credit file apart from a couple of nasties which are dragging it down I am scared are going to stop from getting a mortgage/loan - how can i get them off? any advice

1) Jokers called Robinson way - bought a debt from a property I let out, I bought place in 2006 and its been tenanted pretty much the entire time, I got some letters off these guys in Jan there asking for £300 for this flat for some old debt.

They cant tell me much about it but at some stage a tenant changed the elec and gas back into my name and bumped scottish gas for the money before they moved out. It is on my file as 2008 default to robinson way, but they can only tell me this is the date they acquired the debt so its before this.

I obvoiusly told then where to go for the money - they have given up chasing it but are ignoring my requests to remove it from credit file, and eqifax and experian say they need robinson way to ok the removal.

2) Student loans company - 1996-99 loans, fell out with them, they kept losing or denying they receive correspondance, then done some deffering, moved house but pretty much been ignoring them for years now, bad i know! owe them £2000 (mostly charges) sitting on experian (not equifax?) as a defualt! if i start talking to them and even pay all this will this bad info stay.

any advice??

You stuffed if they are legitimate defaults (and they sound as if they are).

Basicall they’ll be there or 6 years. The whole purpose of credit history is to show how you manage you credit accounts. I your case, quite poorly I think.

I don't really need that much credit hence I haven't checked my credit score or applied for credit, until now of course.

These are the only two bad things, everything else including 5 other mortgages i took out 3-5 years ago and repaying are fine. NO CREDIT CARDS OR PERSONAL LOANS AT ALL. Lots of settled stuff from when i was a student and starting out working when i borrowed more.

The robinson way one is definitely not legitimate, they are trying to con me for someone elses debt, how can i force it off?

student loan one ok that was a mistake but I am looking for advice not really condemnation - there is always a way. Would completely setting the debt get the fact that it has been sitting in default off file. Any ideas?

Sounds like you have no credit history to add to the defaults or whatever these things have mutated into from RW and SLC.

I would seriously start with a Crapital One Classic card or Aqua, stay clear or Vanquis unless you're totally credit deadbeat. This will build you some history.......

With no history and potential defaults, loans and mortgages are extremely unlikely indeed.

  • I understand your frustration, but you've acknowledged that you ignored them and now it's caught up with you. I imagine you knew that would ultimately have a consequence, right? And I appreciate you see it as simple mismanagement, the credit companies see it as your incapability to service debt (potentially)

Regarding the Scottish Gas thing, that's different as you think you've been stitched up. Problem the is you'd have to prove it was put into your name fraudulently (which I assume you've never done as you've not mentioned it?) but in their eyes they're chasing the debt holder i.e. you. Did you record this as fraud with any agencies or the police?

The fact is as long as one default is on there it's tough to get good credit and mortgage deals and currently you have two. Settling the defaults may help in some cases but the default will still remain on file.

Sorry, I'm sure it's not what you want to hear!

I dont like borrowing money at all thats the thing - needed to do it when I was fresh out of school hence student loan - but apart from that have several businesses (which I have been continuallly re-investing in my profits) the banks dont get anywhere near owe them nothing. Have little time for banks, credit agancies they all seem a pretty stupid bunch to me. Have 5 BTL's mortgages thats all.

The Robinson way thing I did not ignore, just didn't know about it at all, only found out in jan11 when i checked my credit file for the first time since i was a student over 10 years ago, robinson way cant even tell me what year this debt is from never mind any details at all. All they can say it is for gas and electric. (they have no details of this debt - they have bought it) I can prove that the flat has been rented out by me for the past 5 years whilst I live somewhere else.

    my current plans are

    1) Get some lawyer or me to negotiate with SLC and tell them I can clear balance owed and even clear entire bill if they remove default.

    2) Tell rob way i am going to go to town on them as there is no way they can prove I owe it as Scot power is defo not going to have meter readings original invoices etc its only £300 but I am not going to let them rob me of it.

    3) Try and save up enough money so as not to need a mortgage at all, however wife is a little bit impatient. ideally want to have this stuff off for January so thats least preffered.

I know I dont want to hear it but waiting 6 years seems pretty crap way to do this to me. There is always a way!
  • Well best of luck, and please do post on here when you find out what that way is. I'm sure there's a few million observers and an entire industry intrigued as to what it is.

Of course, after all of this I assume your wife's credit history is impeccable?

If you provide the tenancy agreements for the period, which if you call scottish gas they will tell you the period so easy to sort.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Maybe just a hint, but valid nevertheless!

The other question is important too, about your wife's record and if you have any financial links?
