Cheap tracking device for our works van?

Options
I have a feeling our delivery driver is having some nice long breaks in between his drops. He usually comes back an hour after his finishing time so he can claim an hours overtime.

The thing is, I've worked out the travelled time and unload time and it doesnt add up.

Does anyone know of a simple GPS based device that would tell me the co-ordinates of the vehicle and if it was stood still for a period of time?

Cheers

i can't suggest any trackers but couldn't you trail him one day and see what he gets up to or tell him that you've had a tracker fitted for insurance

Do you provide him with a mobile phone, if so I believe you can set them up to provide tracking via the Internet

    Have a look at http://www.followus.co.uk/

We also had a company came round offering a tracking device that was around the size of a mobile phone, you hid it in the vehicle and tracked it via the Internet. Think the battery life was around a month
    No wiring or installation required
  • Don't know what it is but there is a way of tracking for the vehicle that some insurance companies use it to verify the use to offer reduced premiums. Sorry I can't be more help

have a ride out with him on a normal day without warning.
Tell him you are doing a time and motion study on all jobs as you need to allocate tasks in to units, he wont have a clue what you are on with
He will soon get the message you might just be on to him.
especially when your finished at Dinner time.

Got an Iphone? I am sure you can get an app to track its location. Stick it on silent, not even vibrate, hide it in the van with a full battery and then see what happens.

You can get trackign systems that will log when the engine is switched on, speeds driven etc. this is useful for driving offences.

Half the incentive for companies to have trackers is letting the drivers know they are in the vehicles so they know they are being watched and don't mess about!

Tracker is the only compnay I have known people use, but Eagle Eye is also supposed to be good.

Pretty much every haulage company I worked for for the last two decades had what they thought a run could be done in. Apart from the middle of the night it very seldom worked out and even in the middle of the night it wasn't uncommon to have an hour or more tacked on because of an accident or roadworks.

Have you actually done the run or are you just yet another typical traffic office womble who thinks that the route planning software you've used can't be wrong?

And if he is hanging the bag out, could it be because your company is paying the same money they used to pay in 2001 like all the haulage companies round here seem to be offering in their job adverts?
  • it sounds ike its the office that do's not add up not the driver ,

    About £100

Provides live tracking on Google maps, not sure it logs, someone may have to monitor its tracking on a PC during the day.

For work I have to use a special TomTom satnav, business version. Does all a normal one does but also reports back my speed, position etc. logs it all on a website. Cost about £500 + subscriptions to service.

Stupid thing is no one uses the information, all too busy to sit watching what drivers are doing, they know where we are supposed to be anyway and customer soon let them know if we are not there. All been an expensive flop really.

When he rang in sick on Monday I did the same Monday route as last Monday and I was back at 2.30 PM, last Monday he was back at 5pm, hence my question about a tracking device.

He is actually paid a good wage for a driver.
