Nice has one attraction that is free, the Promenade des Anglais.
There are some restaurants that are cheaper away from the main tourist restaurant areas.
Restaurants also do Menu du Jour.
It isn't a particularly cheap place to go to though. It's a short flight and can be much warmer than the UK.

The Airport has good coach services to cheaper parts of the coast and also a bus service to the railway station.

I found this http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2004/jul/17/nice.france.budgettravel but it might be out of date.

i thought the attractions in nice were free:D
as for prices if they are anything like monaco be prepared for shouting
    how much
    ?
we seriously couldnt believe how much things were, but found a supermarket selling baguettes freshly made so bought these and ate alfresco sat on a wall next to all the workers and watched the world go by
never seen so many police and woe betide if you double park as they tow away within 15 minutes (it was good watching the rich waving their hands in the air as their limos were recovered away though) how the other half lives
so spend a little watch a lot:)
as i say this was monaco though

Nice is...er... nice, but it's in a fairly expensive part of the world. There are some decent bars and restaurants around the old part of town.

If you have the time then it's worth doing a day trip by train to Monaco just to walk around and gawp and the sports cars, designer shops and huge yachts. It doesn't cost anything to look!
