British Gas 80% price increase!

I got an email from British Gas yesterday.
It says my gas price will go from £33.00 to £45.00 (apx 35% increase) and that my electricity will go from £26.00 to £45.00 (apx 80% increase!!)

I have just this week given a reading.

Online it says my gas account is £10.21 in credit and my electricity account is £87.48

Is this right??

I haven't got round to calling them yet.

Impossible to say. The electricity hike doesn't look right for an existing balance (unless you use electricity for your heating). However if you use gas for heating a £10 credit balance at this time of year is inadequate.

So basically there isn't enough information. If you have any doubts or concerns you should ask British Gas to explain the calculations (in writing or email). In particular their assumptions of annual consumption. Do you have figures for annual consumption in mind?

You might also want to check that the readings you provided (this week) have been entered accurately.

Payments are not the same as price. Get your annual consumption for the last year and workout how much this would cost at the new rates. The direct debit runs for four scheduled bills and this may not be 12 months if your last bill was produced towards the end of the five week billing window. Post more info or call/email BG to get answers
