Can online retailers 'hold' fund's after reciving payment?

Made an order with Topshop for £100. Dispatch email came to £80 as one item was out of stock.
later tried to take money out of cashpoint only to be told theres no funds. ODD. Receive goods and invoice says £80. log on and Co op says I have £20 credit (i knew there was no way I only had £20 left). I go to cashpoint and card declined. I phone co op and she says theres a payment being held for £100 but it doesnt have a name and that I'm overdrawn. I explained that I have the goods and my online statement shows £80 debit to Topshop. she said she cant do anything as its retailers problem. OK FINE.
I go to Arcadia who say they took payment for £80 and that 'maybe it will fall off monday', but on their side it doesn't show up?! Thing is order and payment was done on the 6th so why is £100 still showing @ co op but not arcadia on the 9th? surely they wouldnt have sent the items had payment not gone through?
Is this the norm when dispatch amount differs to order amount? Will I get this money back?

It is the norm and they will only debit your account with £80 and the £20 earmarked will become available to you shortly.
Have you not considered using a credit card for internet transactions/ It is safer and provides you with more security.0 -
I think what the OP means is Topshop have taken the £80 but the original £100 is still earmarked, not just the £20. Unfortunately it can happen sometimes if the total amount payable is less than the original amount on the order. Depending on your bank they might be able to release the funds, but there's no guarantee and you could very well be stuck til Monday I'm afraid.Feb 2024:

You say that the account is showing a positive £20 balance so they can't charge for an overdrawn account when it has never been overdrawn (ear-marking is not the same as taking).0 -
she's the one that mentioned me being overdrawn, not me. I'll get a letter shortly i suspect.0
