Am I entitled to anything, anything at all?

Evening all,

quick question, am I entitled to any short term financial help from the government if I am unable to work for a period of time?

the facts are:
  • I am full time employed
  • I get 3 weeks paid sick
sounds great so far doesn't it, a job and paid leave, however, the following is also true:
  • my surgeon has said i should ideally have 3-4 months off following surgery then thats follwed by 2-3 months of physio/rehab
  • I am also having both feet operated on seperately so all together I am looking at 12-14 months off with maybe some time in the middle where i can go back to work before I have the second surgery.
Am I just barking up the wrong tree? I cant help but feel slightly aggitated that I work my a$$ off to provide for my daughter, never miss a bill payment and pay my tax's/N.I

I feel I should be entitled to something or should I just be grateful for the good things that I do have.

x

    statutory sick pay
  • sorry forgot to mention. SSP wouldnt cover the monthly food bill, let alone mortgage, utilities, insurances and various other bills we all have.
  • Statutory sick pay for first 6 months, then employment and support allowance. You may also be entitled to housing benefit (if renting), council tax benefit, more tax credits - all depending on joint income (if you're in a couple).
  • Your tax credits may increase if your income will be much reduced. I'd suggest a call to them and also speak to HR/personnel at work I imagine they will have advice on how people cope when on long term sick. Hope the Op goes well.

turely i cant be employed and claim benefits?

It may be possible to claim low income benefits once you are only receiving Statutory Sick Pay. This will depend on your household income and savings.
  • thank you all

  • If you have a dependant child you need to put in a claim for tax credits.
