Money gone missing! - UPDATED

After the company talked to their bank and insisted yet again it wasn't there, I went back to Tescos for the third time. And this time, with a lot of perseverance, I finally got to speak to someone who could actually tell me what sort code and account number it went to. Which bore no resemblance to where I thought it had gone.
Then I went down my list of online payees and managed to match it up, so I guess I must have chosen the wrong payee. Although I'm not sure how, because I believe I set this company up as a new payee and immediately made the payment as part of the same process, but it obviously was my fault. Luckily the payee was someone I know well and they have agreed to transfer the money back.
But if Tescos had shown the payee on my list of transactions - or been able to tell me the sortcode and account number it went to in less than 10 days - it would have been a lot easier!
let that be a lesson learnt...... set up the new payment.... make payment, then delete it off the list....
this wil prevent you sending to someone its not meant for next.... next time you mighten be too lucky.... i hope your buying this person a beer.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -

I do have the money back now, thank you. I'm not sure what would have happened if it had been to a random stranger, presumably I'd have lost the money, so I'll have to be more careful in future. One of you suggested deleting the payee immediately after making the payment, but then I wouldn't even be able to check the sortcode and account number I'd set up for that payee, so I'm not too sure about that.
I still think I should be able to find out who I've paid money to in under 10 days and 3 hours of phone-calls though. And I can't imagine it's a cost-effective use of Tescos customer service staff either. But all's well that ends well, thank you for everyone's help.0 -
Tesco Bank does seem a bit hopeless in this regard.
I scheduled a payment (in advance) on to leave one of my Tesco account on 13/09 to go to my RBS current account. It didn't arrive on the 13th. I did a manual payment (for a different amount, fortunately) also to my current account on the 13th, and this arrived immediately. I assumed that the missing payment would turn up during the day.
On the 14th, today, I checked my current account, the payment hadn't arrived.
As the OP said, with Tesco's system you can't check who the payment has gone to - it doesn't even tell you which of your payees you've sent it to, never mind the details of the account etc. FOrtunately I only have 3 payees set up on my Tesco account, so I checked all 3 accounts, and none of them had received the money. I phoned customer service, who checked it and said she needed to escalate it and she would call me back at 2pm.
She called me back just before 2. She had been told to tell me that the money would arrive in my account some time today, and that "Faster Payments" didn't mean "same day" (even though a manually made payment on 13th did transfer immediately).
Of course it hasn't arrived, so I'll phone them again tomorrow.
It's only for a couple of hundred pounds, but I'm a bit cross with them. I'm cross because the payment hasn't gone when planned, and I am cross that their stupid system doesn't tell me which of my payees I've sent the money to.0 -
Future payments arranged in advance do not go by faster payments - at least not until the new EU directive comes into force in November.0

That's interesting - each withdrawal is listed and it shows the payment method used. For my future payments it says "Faster Payments"
The money turned up last night, by the way.0
