Can I claim CTC and WTC whilst working?

Hello,

To quickly summarise/introduce my situation:
I am just wondering if I can claim both CTC (Child Tax Credits) and WTC (Working Tax Credits) whilst working?

Now an overview of my situation:

- Unemployed since Jan 2011
- Living with partner
- 2 children under the age of 3yrs old
- partner pregnant (due early nov this year)
- joint claim for JSA (£400 a month in total)
- getting CTC (£100 a week)
- getting CB (Child Benefit) (£33 a week)
- getting Council Tax Relief
- no savings/other income/caring for anyone/sharing a house, etc

I got a job starting at the end of September:
- 40hrs a week
- £6.54 an hour (£13k before tax)

So based upon my calculations (and using the direct.gov benefits calculator) it seems as if that after the £209* a week I get from work I would be entitled to about:
- £100 a week CTC
- £90 a week WTC
- £33 a week CB

Of course I fully understand that I loose JSA, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Relief. But I just want to confirm that I will get the figure of £432 per week? Sounds to good to be true, considering I have beeen working for less previously (even with a partner, kids, etc). Yes, no doubt thats probably because I didnt claim these benefits back then (Due to ignorance).

Any quick answers (i.e. yes/no) or comments would really be appreciated.

Yup, sounds about right! You may even still get some HB, I do...seems crazy to me! I earn £725 a month for a 2 day week, but get £177 a week in WTC, CTC and childcare - and still get half my rent paid...madness! That's all going to end though with my impending redundancy :( Tax credits will go on last years income though - but you can always give (an accurate) estimate for this year, give them a ring x
  • Wuhoo!

The problem I always have is not knowing who I can get advice off. The CAB are just too busy and when a problem arises its months before I can get an appointment.. by which time the issue has been resolved.

Who do I ring? I called the Benefits Enquiry line (10p a min, no number on the 'saynoto0870' site) but they just booked me in for an assessment/checkup appointment in two weeks (just days before the job starts and I have to move to a new city, etc).

  • Tried that number but i was told it was the line for disability benefit? Perhaps I was being fobbed off (its Friday evening after all).

Nevermind, I got in contact with Turn 2 Us and they gave me lots of positive advice. Hopefully things are turning out better!

You only get WTC when you are working and just have to call the Tax Credit Office and give them the details of your new employment

  • Since I am relocating to a new town/city I have:

    1) moving costs (e.g. removal/moving service or a van hire).
    2) bond/deposit/rent to pay in advance.
    3) still have to give my landlord 1 months notice.
    4) should have the last month from with my landlord as I pay rent in advance.

So is there anything I can claim, such as the following:

    - Crisis Loan (whats it for, how much?)
    - ADF (Advisor Discretionay Fund) (whats it for, how much?)
    - Local housing (or moving) grant? (whats it for, how much?)
    - Return to Work grant (whats it for, how much?)

If I qualify for any of the above who do I contact about getting them sorted.

Also, any advice when speaking to those people or filling in the forms would be appreciated.

    "benefits advisory..."

Do you mean I should go and see a Benefits advisor at the Job Centre? Already got that booked in but the soonest they would do it is days before my new job starts.
