PC - Physical Memory Dump?

Hi,

I have a problem with my PC.

I am running Win XP Pro - fully updated with all security updates and SP2.

Both me and my wife have log on profiles.

I get the crash when my wife has been using the pc and not logged off. I log and later and the pc crashes, normally when I access the internet.

Its driving us both potty!!!!!!!!!

Any ideas?

Thanks

    Hi,

I have added a wireless network recently, also 3 or 4 software applications. Some additional kids software (but this was after the crashes started).

Is there an easy way to identify whats causing it?
  • Try a System restore to before the date you installed those programs and that network.
If that fixes it the you know it is one of those things you did.
Then you just need to install them again one by one and just wait inbetween each one to see if it crashes.

thanks jamangie - I havent backed in donkeys years - I know I should have -so going this way would not be possible.

    thanks though
  • Does the computer just freeze so that you have to reset or do you get a dump file or error code?

Jazzycat - windows xp system restore is not the same as restoring from backups of your data. Windows keeps restore points of the state of the system which you can go back to in the event of problems. It should create these restore points at regular intervals and when new software is installed.
Go to start > help and support > undo changes to your computer with system restore.
Then click on restore my computer and it will show you when restore points have been created.
Restoring to an earlier point will not mean you lose any data, it will set your system to how it was on that day. This is what Jamangie is suggesting.
If you do a restore and it makes no difference, you can restore back again to how it is at the moment.

No problem Jamangie, just looked like the op wasn't familiar with system restore!
And it was good advice too, IMHO

Onthe freeze front I can't remeber what is does except I get the dreaded blue screen and a counter increasing by the second. Just have to turn pc off and reboot. Will check next time for any codes etc.

    thanks!
  • Click Start - Run - type eventvwr.msc and click OK and check for errors.

Bring up Device Manager and look for red or yellow icons there.
