Bought by mistake

just sold something and 2 mins later get an email saying bought by mistake-can you resolve. What do i do? Just ignore them and then file for a non payment? Or do i have to fart around offering it to the next person and claim my fees back from the original person?

If it was me I would raise a cancellation request as the buyer has clearly said they don't want it anymore. However there will be a few people who will say not to cancel but to raise a NPB dispute.

If you do go for a mutual remember the buyer either needs to confirm with ebay that they agree, or else the mutual has to close without the buyer disagreeing on day 7. If buyer does choose wrong option when asked by ebay then you lose your FVFs.

Wait 4 days, then open a non paying bidder dispute, then if they still don't pay, close it 4 days later.

    Was it an expensive item?

OR... offer to cancel and let them off if they pay your fees.

    I wouldn't risk a mutual.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Then when you raise the NPB the buyer could pay out of spite, receive the item, raise a SNAD, (or worse an INR) and then you would have to refund anyway and they could leave you a negative!!

Far fetched, I know, but no more than the buyer refusing a cancellation out of spite or clicking the wrong option!

I've cancelled many sales because the buyer has changed their mind or 'bought by mistake' and have never had a problem. There is a lot of paranoia over the cancellation option on this forum!!
  • If you are a business and it was a BIN you have a legal obligation to accept the cancellation without any penalty to the buyer.

Me too, perhaps those saying open a UID don't have the comms skills?

Thank you for that, but each to our own. I have had a buyer refuse a mutual and leave a neg on my private account even though they told me they bid by accident- so never again. Luckily the neg no longer shows but it hurt for a while.

Also go look at the community boards, you'd be surprised how many buyers are too dim to agree to a mutual- after all they have already proved they are not very bright merely by 'bidding by accident'.

There is no legal reason why a seller can't open an unpaid item dispute in order to get their fees refunded and also to get the buyer a non payment strike.

ebay really need to have an option in place where a buyer can request to have the transaction cancelled under the DSR's (if the sale is covered by these) and when they do this the sellers fees should automatically be refunded without the need for trying to reclaim them through a mutual cancellation.
  • There is no legal reason why a seller can't open an unpaid item dispute in order to get their fees refunded and also to get the buyer a non payment strike.

Well the point of the DSR is to give the buyer confidence in online shopping, imposing a
penalty (unpaid item strike) for them exercising their legal right to cancel doesn't really inspire much confidence.

At the end of the day if a buyer says I'd like to cancel and it doesn't cause much inconvenience (i.e a BIN item) it's extremely bad service to say no.

In the case of the OP a well worded email to say no worries, cancellation opened, won't mark your account, thanks very much and you will 99 times out of 100 end up with a happy buyer and your fees refunded.
