Exploding tin of dog food

Hi, I opened a can of dog food that literally exploded, the lid flew off with a loud bang and a disgusting, foaming, extremely smelly substance went all over me and my kitchen, the smell was so bad it made me physically sick. I contacted the manufacturer, explaining what had happened and sending them pictures of the item. They responded with an explanation of why this had happened and they sent me vouchers to replace the remaining tins I had left (27 in total) and as a goodwill gesturethey sent me an extra £10.00 of vouchers. They asked me to also send them a list of any cleaning materials that I had had to replace along with any receipts, but I didn't bother doing this as I thought that would be the end of it. However today I have received another letter from them with another £5 voucher and a £10 cheque, which is obviously very nice of them, but with it there is a form that they want me to sign that says:

without prejudice

i confirm that I have received and accept cheque no xxxxx for the amount of £10 in full & final settlement of the above ref. no.

This has made me think that they might be trying to fob me off with a small amount when they are possibly expecting me to make a higher claim against them.

Can anyone offer any advice/comments please?

Thanks:D

Don't feed the dog with this stuff.
  • I know plrfd, it took me and oh ages to clean up and was quite a traumatic experience all in all. I'm just glad that it wasn't my 12 year old son that opened it.

But overall you have received maybe £60 in gift vouchers/money...

If it was really bad maybe you should have had it professionally cleaned and sent them the copy of the bill for cleaning?

Just don't sign the form if you don't feel happy and move on.

I know why I prefer dry dog food for my dogs! :)

  • This post made me glad I use dry food for my dogs too! Ew! If you thought the vouchers were the end of it and were ok with that then I would take the cheque and move on, unless your cleaning costs were substantially more, then itemise them as the company suggested. The disclaimer is probably standard practice in case someone gets sue happy but I wouldn't say it's worth it in this case, it must have been unpleasant but there's no long term harm done.

There was an awful smell coming from the dog food at work . I was chosen to hunt the source of the smell. Found it and came from a 6 can pack. I held it and could see the offending tin was blown and the juices leaked down my arm _pale_.

It smelt the same as dog poo.

I've always thought wet food smells the same when it goes in as it does when it comes out!
