Quick question re returned item

Buyer emailed to say item hadn't arrived (some 3 weeks after posting) I replied to them, apologising and asking them to contact the sorting office as the item was too big for the letterbox and to get back to me if they had any problems. I've heard nothing form them regarding the item so assumed it was all OK.

This morning the postie hands me a returned item - Yep its come back to me as uncalled for at the sorting office

What do i do now? I was happy to refund and claim for the (small) loss from the PO but as it stands I have the item & the buyers payment

Any suggestions on what to do? Seems I'm likely to be out of pocket either way?! :(

Either refund the buyer unilaterally or repost it.

If it wasn't delivered and buyer didn't get a card then it's not their fault. Some people find contacting the sorting office not very helpful. I had a missing item in the summer and I was told to contact the SO, I had no idea where it was to begin with and had to ask on here about what to google. The item wasn't there and so I asked again for a refund.

It possibly sounded a bit like a fob-off to them and your good intentions may have gone unnoticed.

Next time it might be a good idea to reassure them that you will refund if it doesn't turn up and it's not at the sorting office.

You are out of pocket but they are a lot more out of pocket than you are and keeping both item and payment is pretty much going to result in some kind of problem with them.
