xbox questions - file transfers

Options
Hi
I have a xbox (not 360), which is chipped. I have been looking around on the net and have seen you can link the xbox to a PC and transfer files, like games and music. First of all i was wondering what you need to do to do this: cables & software, and were to get these.
Plus i have a few movies on my computer and was wondering if i transfered these over would i be able to watch them off the hard drive of the xbox.

thanks in advance

    Hi,

I would suggest you look and read the faq's and forums here:

    http://xbox-scene.com/

Look under Tutorials then PC and there are some pdfs explaining it all

You use standard network cable into your hub / router. Connecting to it is via FTP.. so you can use something like smartftp.

First you would need to install something like EvolutionX to give network / ftp access.

I am using XBMC (Xbox Media Centre) which I think is great, but the networking etc is still done via EvoX or other.

The original hard drive in the xbox is not that big. Did you have a larger HDD installed?

If not something like XBMC will stream the data from your pc anyway.. Movies / Music / Pictures.
You can use the xbox remote to contol it. It makes the Xbox pretty useful as an MP3 jukebox, for playing movies (most formats supported) and looking at pictures. Honestly I leave everything on pc and stream it. Copying stuff over is slow anyway since xbox is only 10mb network. For games though they would need to be on the internal HDD.

    Some screenies of XBMC dash:

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow.
  • it depends on your home network setup.

But basically the min you need is a crossover cable and a NIC card in your PC.
  • Thanks

Got the xbox before xmas so me and my son could play on sonic games, didnt realise how good they were! not sure about the size of the hard drive, is there anyway i can find out?

If its the newer version its 10GB older versions hav 8GB.... You can install another one but it can be slightly complicated. I have an 80GB in mine that I stuck in my Argos one.. Best £50 ever.
  • u need to burn the evox on to a cd then run the cd on the xbox and go to the network settings and get the ip of the xbox and set up and simple network between the xbox and the pc,.

u'll need a FTP program (theres a free ad-on with firefox called fireftp)
u need a network card/port should be on ur pc
u need a rj45 crossover cable (network cable)
and the XBMC software for xbox which u can download for free of their site

ones u connected with ur xbox u need to put the settings into ur ftp program then look in to the C: drive of the xbox and (for good measure) move the evox program to the C: (guides on there evox site) this will make the xbox boot the evox program 1st,. so u can ftp to it when u need to,. then add the files u want to,.

then u play the moive or view the pics etc with xbmc,. (xbmc the best thing that happened to the xbox),. the xbmc team still are in development,. to make it even better,. but i think they have sealed it with the mainstream users who wanted a media center under the tv,. i had 300gb harddrive in my last xbox i didnt want to part with it but good money was offered and that was that,. :)
