HELP..... setting up wireless network

Okay hopefully some of you kind folks on here will be able to help a thickie like me, have tried looking at the thread for "wireless" but can't find what I am looking for there.
Trying to set up a wireless network and have purchased a "D-Link DSL-924" router from PC world and having problems getting connected on the desktop it's connected to, haven't even got as far as trying the wireless part yet doh!

Have connected the cable from the telephone line to the rear of the router and used an ethernet cable to connect router to desktop, used the quick install on the installation cd and if I open up network connections it is shown as a LAN connection and says it is connected, however if I try to send/receive emails or open up web page pop up says I am offline and do I want to connect, if I hit connect the dial up pop up appears.
I am sure it must be something really silly that I am doing wrong and it is only a tick in a box or something but its knowing where to find the box .............
Any help greatly appreciated
Titch :)

this assumes that your router is connecting to the internet
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • As Albert says, make sure the router is actually connecting to the internet.

Log in to router at http://192.168.0.1 and check that the 'WAN' status (the bit that connects to the internet) is shown as Connected. If not, check that the WAN configuration is properly set up with login information supplied by your ISP.

Thanks for your reply when setting up the router the only information I had to input on "quick install" is my ISP, log in name and password and then it did all the rest itself.
I did try to check the configutaion manually by going into 192.168.1.1 (as stated in instruction book) but when I try to connect to that I still get the working offline - do you want to connect etc.

The PC that I am having problems with is my pals house so not the one I'm using but I will try what Albert suggests and try again

Sorry but on checking that site it would appear that it costs to get assistance from there, this site is about money saving so why would I want to pay someone to sort a problem when it might be a very simple problem that I can do myself with a little assistance.
So am I reading that site wrong and it is free ?

So where are you up to now. Have you connected to anything?
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

Did as Albert suggested and worked a treat.
Thanks to everyone for their assistance, knew it had to be something simple (just like me)

If you ring D-link helpline they are really quick and helpful and don't keep you on the phone for long. They will talk you through every step and will get you connected in no time. I have had a couple of problems and have rang them and always get connected to the internet straight away, I hope this helps you.
