First time buyer - solicitors

Just read another post on here about solicitors...the country wide one and it got me thinking.

I've literally just got off the phone from the Estate Agent who was asking if we had chosen a solicitor yet. I told her it was between 2 but probably a local one called Wheelers. She then said not to go with them, they are slow an rubbish. Am I to believe her?

She's recommended 2 which the quotes are the same as wheelers, so financially it doesnt matter who I pick. I don't have any friends or family to get recommendations from.

Go with your own choice, not the estate agent's.

I am sure the solicitors you have mentioned would appreciate a call to be told that local estate agents are saying this to people.

I think it might be an idea to remove the company's name from your post as well.

where did you get the recommmendation for wheelers from? if you havent got one ask around at work/ mates etc, who have they use would they recommend anyone and get a snse of what wheelers is like. there IS a chance that wheelers are slow, most DO seem to be in my limited but exasperated experience!!

the estae agent DOEs make commission thats true, but when I bought this place I got one off a recoomendation through my trade union who were terrible , and then I panicked and went with the one recommended through my mortgage broker, and hats off she was superb ( although not the cheapest either I later twigged)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Our seller's had a local solicitor who was so slow and incompetent that the chain nearly collapsed. The estate agent said he had heard they were not the best but coudn't believe how bad they turned out to be. Sometimes it is worth listening to the estate agents, especially when they are telling you not to go with someone as opposed to pushing their own guy.

I was speaking to the manager of a local EA and she was telling me that she simply won't deal with one solicitor, they are that bad. And she wasn't trying to sell me anyone's services either...

though the way things are going with ours lately, I should have asked! LOL

Upon recommendations from other users of this site we have gone with the conveyancing warehouse, they are based online I believe. I don't get involved with the financial side of it so can't tell you much more I'm afraid :o But I do know that they were much cheaper than the local solicitors I called. I know cheapest isn't best always but we based our decision on recommendations from users here.
