Carers allowance

this is a long topic, so ill try and shorten it for you.

My Mother has COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and its pretty severe, basically everything she does makes her get out breath really quick, now ive been caring for her since i was 13, im now 24 ive tried on numerous occasions to claim carers allowance and everytime my claim is rejected, i appeal everytime and its still rejected.

the reason im given is "your mother does not receive the required benefits for you to get carers allowance" or something like that, as far as i know she currently receives DLA, the rates are as follows:
Mobility allowance = Highest
Care Component = lowest

now, because the care componant is the lowest rate apparently thats the reason i cant get carers allowance, i do everything at home, cooking, cleaning, shopping, paying bills, the only things i dont have to do is her grooming and stuff so i dont bathe her or anything, i had an interview about this at the job centre a few days ago and they said to me "what your doing isn't really being a carer, because single parents do the same as you everyday".

i was just wondering if anyone has any advice or suggestions?

Thank you

Neil

Disabled people dont get help with what you are doing, we ONLY get help with what your mum can do for herself, you are not her carer and can never be given carers allowance unless your mother needs more personel care but if she dosnt after all this time I cant see it changing in a hurry but she could try for a suppersession of her DLA care BUT she could lose her whole DLA award, and its not unlikely either from reading posts from other claimants though if she has a huge amount of evidence to back up her claim it less likely.

You are not a carer so you are not entitled to carers allowance so are expected to work.

This is the list of different levels of care for DLA do you think your mother is in the right group. if she is then you can not claim carers sorry
    .
    Lowest rate
If you need help for some of the day or you are unable to prepare a cooked main meal.
    Middle rate
If you need help with personal care frequently or supervision continually throughout the day only, or help with personal care or someone to watch over you during the night only, or someone with you while you are on dialysis.
    Highest rate
If you need help or supervision frequently throughout the day and during the night.
You can get Disability Living Allowance for your care needs even if no one is actually giving you the care you need, even if you live alone.
  • neil welcome to mse,i`m sorry to say that unless your mum gets care component at middle or higher rate then you wont carers allowance no matter what you do,it might be worth seeing cab or welfare rights to see if she could successfully apply for her care component to be looked at again(dont do this without seeking advice as she could lose what she gets now if not careful)
