    Thanks - not sure of the maximum oil capacity of ordinary cars

    What it is when it is at the top of the dipstick, typically 4.5 to 5.5 litres. Going from the minimum to max mark on the dipstick of most cars is typically 0.75l or so. You've put in more than 3 tims that so assuming it was on the low mark, the level of the oil is about 2" higher than the top mark which means the oil is sitting in the same place that the pistons want to occupy.
