Do I have to cut a root on a neighbours property?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes..
I just had a visit from our neighbour, she complains that our cherry tree has a root that has come up in her garden and wants me to cut the tree down or at the very least remove the root.
I understand that I am liable for any damage that a tree root may cause to her property, but this is the funny part - it is no where near any property. It is just in the soil. I suggested to her that she is perfectly fine to pull any roots out she likes but wants me to do it?
Don't misunderstand me here - we are talking about a 1 - 2cm thick root, the tree itself is not big and it is far enough from the boundary that any "roots" that do appear would only be small.
She also insisted that I remove a single bramble that had gone through the fence (rather than her just cutting it herself!)
We are dealing with a rather moany neighbour here (she frequently has a go at the other side too).
Just wanted to make sure she cant bill me for cutting a 2cm root that is just in a flower bed?

If you don't want to cut it, let her put weedkiller on it. That'll sort it out.0

if you do it once, you'll have to do every single time, and for the rest of your life. make a stand now or regret your choice everytime she considers something in her garden as a potential rogue from your property.0

all this for a 2cm root.
our neighbour has a rose that is next to the boundry fence and it often sneeks through the gap in the fence, we used to just push it back through, but this never worked, so we just prune the rose with our neighbours consent0 -

If she decides to put weedkiller on it that's not going to kill just the one root, you may end up losing your tree.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Just throw a few cherries at her.;) as it's already been said you cut it once for her YOU will spend a lifetime doing it.
Let her cut it back that way she can continue moaning.:)0 -
tell her she has the right to cut it, but if she cuts anymore than to the line of the garden boundry you will sue her for damages.
also, you want the root cutting back!Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000

We had to have a tree taken down as the root was going under the fence and lifting it.
I suppose it depends if the root is causing damage?Life is a rollercoaster.....ya just gotta ride it:whistle:0 -
Why not just do it and shut her up? Do you really need this hassle in your life?
Afterall, as petty as this neighbough seems, YOUR tree has overgrown on to HER property.0 -
Is it definitely a root from your tree, and could it be something else?
I would have thought for a root to travel far enough to a neighbours garden, no matter how big/small your gardens are, the tree would have to be pretty big.....0
