Mobile Phone Fraud Advice

Options
Hi,

I think this is my first time post so please be gentle.

In May 2011 my wife and I were victims of fraud. I had 2 Iphone 4's taken out on my Tmobile account and my wife had 1 IPhone 4 taken out on hers.

We immediately phoned T Mobile and had them cancelled.

We were told it had been referred to the fraud team and would be contacted within 48 hours.

I contacted customer care over a dozen times over the course of a month or so and even threatened to leave. Each time I was promised a call back from the fraud department and told I could not leave unless i wanted to pay off my contract in full.

I went away on holiday in the summer and lost the will to fight this further as each time I called them felt like it sucked a little more life out of me. Seeing as I hadn't lost any money only time and emotion it was a pointless battle.

I was still very annoyed that I didn't know what ID had been provided to allow them to take out three contracts at our address.

At some point recently i decided to throw away all my notes regarding phone calls to T Mobile as they made me feel ill looking at them.

We are very security conscious and shred all paper work and are careful with online website transactions.

I checked my credit rating and there was nothing suspicious going on there. There have also been no transactions to my knowledge on any of our bank accounts or credit cards.

TODAY!! I came home to find two letters from Tesco Mobile. Apparently I have taken out two mobile phone contracts with them.

I contacted them immediately and they have cancelled the lines. They have also apparently transferred this to their fraud department and couldn't give me any useful information at all.

Following my call to Tesco Direct tonight I have re initiated my calls to T Mobile to see if I can find out what happened.

Any advice as I feel sick to my stomach knowing that this could happen again at any time.

If I know what data of ours has been compromised I might be able to do something about it.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and for any feedback.

Adam

Well you made a post last year but thats not important. Have you maybe considered your pc is compromised ? ive had a sky contract taken out and 1 or 2 phone contracts taken out but im unsure as to what website was at fault although i do have my suspicions about it. No need to worry yourself over it but aimt to find out where the information is being taken from.
  • I run AV on all my computers. IT is my career and I am very careful what I run at home. I give IT security advice to others at times and consider myself quite knowledgeable about current threats/malware/hacks/scams etc.

I'm more interested in getting these companies to help me get to the bottom of it. Hopefully using their information they can assist in telling me what information was provided as ID.

Whether it was in store or online etc.
  • I have cancelled my debit cards as a preventetive measure.

Planning to write to TM head office tonight.

    Any other ideas?

Maybe call them anonymously (as a potential new customer) and see what information they do ask for?

You will be lucky to get anything out of them, I can pretty much guarantee that they will quote (possibly incorrectly) the data protection act in order not to tell you anything.
