Problem with EDF energy.

My new house has a gas meter provided by EDF but the previous tenant had a debt with them, they came out once to clear and reset out the meter so they would stop taking £35 per £50 i put on it.

I topped up today £50 of gas and they took another £35 for debt

Rang today and held for 2 hours only to be told they wont come out until the meter is empty to reset it again

I am not with EDF, i am with EON now but no one seems to know who's responsibility it is to remove the meter EDF say its not theirs and EON say its EDF's propery. so I have to use the meter to get gas

EDF refused to refund me the first £35 they took and now they have £70 of my money and when enquiring about how to get it back they sent me to that alternative dimension and cut me off.

Can I legally demand my money back and who has to remove the meter

  • Let me get this right, EDF have claimed GBP70 of your cash to help clear a debt for gas used at the property you are at, before you even lived there. They are still doing this because they own the meter even though you now get your gas from another supplier.

Dont think you are going to get anywhere with edf. Why did they have you on the phone for 2 hours? Your phone bill is going to be higher than your gas bill at that rate.

Do utility companies have an ombudsman or governing body? I would complain to them and insist on being refunded any monies owed.

It took nearly 2 hours to get through to them because they have updated a system etc etc only 10 mins of actual talking time took place, they also shut off their phonelines at 6pm

  • Im not surprised you are fed up. I have just checked their website and you can email them. May be quicker in the long run to get things resolved. If they dont respond then it is extra evidence of their shoddy customer services when you complain to those above them.

Call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. They are very good on helping with utility issues like this - and you'll find EDF will take a bit more notice if Consumer Direct are involved in the case.

    Hi Ravenlady

When we take over prepayment accounts, we send out a new payment device so the meter can be topped up. This device also clears down any debt and sets our rates on the meter.

When did we start supplying the gas? Are you using the payment device we sent to top up the meter?

It may help if you have a chat with one of our gas prepayment teams (contact details will be on your bills or in the welcome pack we send out). If you haven't received a card or the card you have isn't working properly, they'll be able to send out a replacement.

Hope this helps Ravenlady. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

Hi, I switched my account over from my old house, I have never used a pre-payment meter nor do i want this meter in, i am paying EON my usual DD but also having to pay for gas on the keycard

When did we start supplying the gas? Are you using the payment device we sent to top up the meter?

I have had no device from EON, a man came out from EDF to give me a new keycard as the previous tenant took their's before EON took it over. My switch went through in July

    Hi Ravenlady

I would definitely recommend contacting one of our prepayment teams.

If we are the gas supplier, you'll need to be using our payment device not the previous suppliers. Using another device will only cause problems on your account.

You can also talk to them about removing the prepayment meter and replacing it with a credit meter.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Might help if YOU read the OP's first post.

    She's with EON

EDF have a free phone number 0800 056 7777 which might easy the phone bill - but do what I did when I had massive problems with EDF - first words out of your mouth should be hello how do I make a complaint please
