We are a family of 5 and I try to budget for £400 per month. I usually go over by a bit but knowing I've posted that figure helps me to try to focus on not spending much more than that. I will try to stay within budget this month.

It definitely helps to meal plan. i also try to buy what fruit and veg is in season or on offer- 3 veggies in my house. It is difficult and getting harder all the time. Good Luck.

Have a look in the Old Style part of MSE - there is a monthly grocery challenge thread + other threads about keeping costs down. There's also a big recipe index at the beginning of the grocery challenge thread. Good luck with this and also on the job front.

Thnkas to everyone who replied, and yes I do intend to get going on some homecooking! Although I need to expand my repertoire from Spag bol and sausage cassarole to a few things a little more exciting :)

Invest in a good, 'simple cooking' recipe book and plan ahead for the week, I make a list of all the ingredients and ONLY buy what's on the list. This saves me (on shopping for 2) about £30 a week. It's easy to get carried away with offers but you can often make it from scratch for less and freeze what's left over.

I love my slow cooker and always have a freezer full of healthy leftovers, good for my pocket as well as our waistlines :)
:hello: Saving for that rainy day!
