I did exactly what you describe at Stansted a while back when I went to see off some pax at one departure area, then found I couldn't get back to the central area where the shops etc are to then go to my own departure area (I think they are called satellites at Stansted).
I managed to do it, but it was a lot of hassle as when I initially couldn't get back from the first satellite, security had to escort me and drive me to another area, then when I went to go through the security check again my boarding card was scanned and they refused me entry as it showed I'd already been through. I then got another boarding card printed and made it through.
So it can be done, but it's a bit of a hassle.

    A very useful warning.

Since the OP's mother is flying on with Ryanair, she would probably face a forty pound fee for having a new boarding pass printed.

A far better solution would be to arrange for the delivery to arrive earlier. The OP's mother could arrive on her domestic flight, go out of the secure area, and immediately meet the person with the object for her. At that point she could go to the departures area; pass security as if she had just arrived at the airport; and then enjoy her visit to Stansted.

An additional complication: when I last flew out of Stansted (in 2008) I was told that there are no lounges in the Satellite used by Ryanair, and so it was not possible for Ryanair passengers to use this service. (A Ryanair boarding pass would only get you into the Satellite that Ryanair used, not into any of the areas that had lounges.)

I think once they have scanned that card it would be void in any form if used again. You did the right thing in contacting them as it is apparent that there are different rules at airports

Yes, you are perfectly correct. I have just had confirmation back from Stansted Airport to say that a printed duplicate boarding pass would not allow anyone to re-enter the Departures area. What my mother would have to do is obtain another boarding pass from Ryanair (at £40 fee) which flags to Security that the holder has been through security before and left.
The Stansted people advise as per Voyager2002`s advice and for delivery to take place when she comes off the domestic flight and has to wait a bit for the Ryanair desk to open in order to check-in for the connecting flight..
Also, at Stansted now, there is the No1 Lounge near to Gate 49 which is recommended for Ryanair users.
Thanks to everyone for their input, much obliged.

I am enquiring as to whether it is permissible to leave the Departures area of an airport (ie after Security) and return to the check-in area, then re-enter Departures again (having undergone Security again).
I ask this as a relative is booked into an Executive Lounge airside during a stop-over of a few hours, but would require to leave after 2 hours to pick up an item being delivered to the main terminal area (landside).
    Any thoughts?

I've never been allowed out once I have been processed into the departure area.

(Actually, I have once, when flights were delayed by over 8 hours, and all the restaurants were in the check in area, so they had to let us out or let us die, but it confused them, and they didn't have a clue how to proces us in and out)
