Replacement MOT Cert?

I have to present my documents to the police (I've not done anything naughty BTW, only because *I* reported that my car had been hit and run )

I can't for the life of me find my MOT certificate - does anyone know how to get a duplicate?

Last time I needed to do so, I got mine from the MOT station who issued the original. There may be a fee (max £10)

direct.gov confirms how to get one: "You may purchase a duplicate test certificate from any MOT test station. However, you must demonstrate you have the right to have a duplicate document. You must provide the test number from the original MOT certificate or the unique number from the vehicle registration certificate (V5C), as well as the vehicle registration number. Alternatively you can take the vehicle to the original MOT test station as to satisfy this proof."

I can't really understand why the police need to see any documents. Their computer tells them everything they need to know in an instant e.g. even a local neighbourhood Police Officer with one of their hand-held PDAs can tell from a reg number who the registered owner is, and whether your MOT or your insurance ran out yesterday.

I know, I think its pretty ridiculous too... it'd take them 2 seconds to double check. They want my Driving License, v5, mot, insurance and inside leg measurement because somebody else committed an offence!

ETA - Turns out I read the certificates wrong. I've got the right one but I read issue date as expiry. D'oh!

Why on earth would the Police need your documents? Is it a local tactic to prevent issuing another crime number to keep their stats low? They can tell straight away if your car is registered to you, if its taxed and insured or MOT'd.

Its apparently because my vehicle has been involved in an offence - the non-exchange of details at the scene of an accident.

They want to ascertain my vehicle was legally on the road at the time I guess
