Because the 1.4 produces less torque than the 1.9 your clutch should be OK.

Absolute nonsense. You are assuming its the same clutch in both cars whereas I can pretty much guarantee the clutch is different between a 1.4 and 1.9 diesel. Car makers put in what they can get away with for the car which makes sense really, no point in putting in expensive components that wont ever be needed. If you remap your car by a considerable margin you will get problems with components failing.

In addition your current braking may not be sufficient for the extra power.

So long as the person driving the car does not carry any more speed into corners or other situations requiring braking than normal, and so has to apply the brakes with equal force pre and post re-map, there is no issue with braking power. Of course, if the OP uses the remap to not only enjoy better acceleration but higher speeds, then there may be an issue.

Personally I'd spend the money on really good tyres. You might not outdrag a remapped model of your car but you may outcorner it...

Outright performance wasn't at all what I had in mind (I'm a massive motorsport fan but not on the public road), was more interested in economy increases with a wee bit more overtaking umpf, but by the sound of it I won't bother
  • the programers making these maps dont take into account what components will be torque rated and limit the map to compensate so often youll find yourself shortening the life span of the clutch. some ecu's are tempramental and a remap can haven adverse affects and can take a few attempts to get right at your inconvienience, and time, a custom remap on my BIL series 2 escort RS took 7 attempts to get righ after putting a stage 3 head stage 3 hybrid turbo, zetec bottom end with acrolyte pistons and conrods and balance crank, beige injectors, a custom rover 820 turbo inlet manifold, 1.8 deisel cutsomized gearbox on shortshift linkage and gearstick, lightened flywheel, performance clutch, -32 actuator, chargecooler, custom fuel rail, custom wiring loom, forge wastegate with custom internal spring, cosworth discs and calipers all round with abs, high pressure fuel pump, boost controller.

the car run well after it was finally mapped correctly due to numerous abs faults, injector delivery problems. the car run boost of 32psi hence the need for custom map as other performance ones dont deliver that, allong with uprated injectors and abs. but it ate through clutches and engine mounts like a kiddie with a pack of skittles.
