Whats wrong with my touchpad?

I have a Fujitsu Seimens Amilo L for 3 years and never had any problems with it untill today.

The touchpad and left button are behaving erratically, sometimes it works fine, sometimes the cursor moves but the left button won't work (so I can't click anything) or the cursor works but the I cannot use the touchpad or the left button to click anything, at other times it highlights everything yet I am not pressing the left button, or moves the page up and down as though I have the button pressed. I can use a mouse okay.

I have also noticed that its slightly slow in keeping up with what I am writing, occasionally some characters are taking a second to show on the screen, never noticed this before.

What could be the problem?

  • Have you been keeping the laptop in hibernate? If so try a reboot.
Or failing that try uninstalling the touchpad, rebooting and reinstalling it. If those fails it could be something more permanant.
  • Thanks Blacksheep.

I never use the hibernate mode. Have rebooted several times and it remains the same, daughter mentioned something was wrong with it last night when she was on it now I think about it.

How do I uninstall and reinstall the touchpad?

If it does it in safe mode (f8 at boot), and you have scanned for malware, it may be the ribbon cable that needs reseating, sometimes pressing all over the keyboard with a bit of pressure can do that, otherwise, you would have to take the kboard off to do it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • start/control panel/administrative tools/computer management

then go to device manager on the left side

on the right hand side there will be a list and click on the mice and other pointing devices.

Go to your touchpad and right click and uninstall.

It sounds to me like the left button is slightly sticking. Most touchpads behave oddly when one of the buttons is clicked down. As albertross says, you need to take the keyboard off to look at this properly, but you might try just easing it out, or sliding something thin under it.

Its not just the button, I often don't use it anyway, I use the touchpad to select or click and this is not working either.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, since I know nothing about laptops I will have to wait for my OH to have a look but I will show him the thread and hopfully something will work!

    Thanks
