Apprenticeships and affects on benefits

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help?

We are currently in receipt of some benefits. My daughter has been offered an apprenticeship in the care home industry and will be paid a flat rate of 95 pounds a week (She is 17). She wants to gain her NVQ's via working on the job.
What benefits does this affect? We are in reciept of child tax credits, Housing benefit, council tax (Both a small amount) carers allowance and income support.
My daughters happiness and employment comes first, I just need to know where I can adjust. I cannot work as I care for my daughter who has special needs?

Thanks

  • You'll lose the CB and CTC which you get for her.

If you're getting income support, why are you not getting the maximum housing benefit and council tax benefit?

    exactly,even 1p a week I/S entitles you to full ctb/hb
  • We were getting full entitlement to HB and CT before the new rules came in with the new government. But apparently because my disabled daughter has now turned 19 the amount has been reduced. I have questioned this twice and all the local authourity will say is your daughter is now considered a non dependant! Even though she is in receipt of DLA at the high rate. To be honest I dont understand it all. Do they think that at the age of 19 she can suddenly renounce her syndrome and become a fully fledged member of the working public?

No, but she should be claiming ESA in her own right and using part of the money to make an independent contribution for her keep/rent into the family household.
  • ESA? Can you explain please, thanks.

Have a look at this thread which discusses abbreviations.

ESA is Employment and Support Allowance.

See link for employment and support allowance and how to claim.

It sounds like you could do with a proper benefits check, especially if you are sure you are still getting income support and not just carers allowance. Try CAB or local welfare rights.

ETA: just noticed she is taking up an apprenticeship so she won't be entitled to ESA. She should contribute to the household though.

I would think there are two daughters. One disabled one not.
  • Thanks for advice. Yes I am talking about 2 daughters. Eldest girl is disabled. Younger one , 17, has been offered the apprenticeship. She is on a flat rate of 95 pound a week and the position is part time ( States this on the paperwork ) 24 hours a week.
I have no choice but to be in receipt of benefits, believe me I would much rather be earning a decent living but unfortunately I cannot. I am just surprised that so much is taken off the benefits and yet the wages she is to receive no where near covers the loss. With her fares to and from work, lunch etc it leaves her 20 pounds a week. She does not smoke or drink and clearly wont be able to afford to go out or help towards her keep. I also understand the council tax benefit will be cut as she is now working although I have yet to confirm this. I'm just at a loss really.
