Can anybody advise if this is correct.?
My Mum and her friend were going to Las Vegas on the 08.06.11 when unfortunately my Mums friend slipped a disc on the morning of the holiday. My mum didnt have cancellation on her insurance so she couldnt claim her air fare back, but we have tried to claim the Airport tax back from Travelpack finally they have come up with a figure £92.19, on her ticket the airport tax states £216.09, thats a difference of £123.90. I know there was £10 admin charge. Is she entiled to the whole of the tax back or not?

Thank You

That is probably taxes, fees and charges.

Sorry to hear that your mum lost her holiday, hopefully the friend is on the mend.

The tax figure of £216.09 will be made up of a whole host of individual taxes. A US arrival tax, a UK Air Passenger Duty, September 11th fee and so on. I'm pretty sure that only some are refundable but it's perfectly reasonable to ask the travel agents for a breakdown.

I ran a dummy booking for Virgin for later this year and the cost breakdown is as follows:
Fare 1: Carrier VS NLXMGZ LON to LAS (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code N
    Covers LGW-LAS (Coach)
    £146.00
Fare 2: Carrier VS OLXMGZ LAS to LON (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code O
    Covers LAS-LGW (Coach)
    £131.00
    VS YQ surcharge (YQ) £196.00
    VS YQ surcharge (YQ) £5.00
    USDA APHIS Fee (XA) £3.10
    US Immigration Fee (XY) £4.30
    US Customs Fee (YC) £3.40
United Kingdom Air Passengers Duty (GB) £60.00
United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge (UB) £11.20
US International Arrival Tax (US) £10.10
US International Departure Tax (US) £10.10
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) £1.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) £2.80

    Subtotal per passenger £584.50
    Number of passengers x1

    TOTAL AIRFARE & TAXES £584.50

If you were to do the same for the route and carrier that she was using you might be able to make some sense of their calculations. The ITA website would be a good place to start: search for the flights and when you have the ones you want select View itinerary and fare details in the blue box.

    Best of luck with this,
    Mands

    XY 4.60
    Total 102.19
