Hi we've booked to go to Edinburgh for the 1st time in December (thanks to the travelodge sale) and would like some ideas on things to do. We've got two children who are 6 and 3 so it will be focused around them. Also any moneysaving advice is appriciated! :jThanks for any advice you can give us. xxx

  • A visit to the National museum in Chambers street is highly recommended and free. Particularly good on a wet day. Just across the road is the statue to Greyfriars Bobby.

Other free museums close by that the kids would possibly like are:

    The Museum of Childhood
    The Peoples story

Both of these are located on the Royal mile which is the main road from the Castle down to Holyrood Palace

This is just a starter if there are specifics you wish to know do not hesitate to conatct me.

    Hope you enjoy your visit:j
  • There will be a lot of christmas stuff on at that time, princes street gardens will be particularly christmassy and will be well worth a visit after dark. There will be christmas markets an ice rink and various funfair ries - however.this is all expensive so.not really mse but still nice to window shop.

Everyone goes to the castle but its very expensive (circa £15 for an adult) - if this is the sort of thing that interests you then you might want to look into a historic scotland membership (£85 for an annual family ticket). There is still a great view from.the castle esplanade even if you dont pay to get in.

The list is the scottish equivalent to time out for listings http://www.list.co.uk/

Thank you curran67 and regprentice so much. Hadn't thought about the museums and my two will love the National Museum so added that to the list. Also hadn't thought about the Christmas fair at night time which looks great. Do you both think the castle is worth a visit or not? Thanks again x
  • I personally enjoy the castle but it is quite expensive. It is quite exposed to the elements which at Xmas time can be cold. Make sure the kids see and hearthe 1 oclock gun go off which can be viewed outwith the castle.

The weather will be a key factor. Get a day ticket for the bus very reasonable. Again if the weather is bad visit Ocean Terminal in Leith which is an indoor shoping centre which has a cinema and you can also see the Britannia:j

There's lots to do, as people have said the Christmas market and ice rink etc should be all running by then too. Remember to bring lots of warm clothes..very chilly at best of times.

I know it's not free and not sure your 3yo would like it but I really really REALLY enjoyed Camera Obscura - if you can get a money off voucher from somewhere would highly recommend it - lot of stairs tho!

hated Dynmaic Earth, took less than 45 mins to go round and was very expensive.

Also worht looking in is the all year round Christmas shop on the Royal Mile :)
Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

There's 3 all year round Christmas shops in Edinburgh on, or just of, the Royal Mile.

As it's Christmas I'd recommend going into Jenners to see the Christmas Tree
