yeah, kobalt are a bit pricier but i think that is down to the quality of components - i guess it depends if you want value for money or much cheapness! for a gaming machine (especially a laptop) a warranty is essential as you're likely to stress it - have you looked at the dell outlet seems to be a few bargains on there from time to time, but you just need to check daily to see what's been added

Do you think I would be much better off going for a 1366x768 screen rather then the full hd screen?

Barely any gaming laptop will run at full HD with modern games. You usually have to choose a lower resolution and stretch it to the HD size anyway.

Personally I don't really see the point in 'gaming' laptops. They offer better general performance than 'normal' laptops, but carry a bigger price tag, awful battery life and don't actually play games very well.

Yer I know about the battery life not being so good and the prices being a lot higher, but its something I want and have the money to spend on :)

After looking around I think I will just have to save so more and spend on a large spec laptop. I think its just a case of looking around to see which mobile g-card is the best and waiting for a deal to come out on a laptop with one.

I know its gunu cost a bomb, but hay thats why I thought I would try here first from recommendations on sites to have a try on to save a little cash :)

Thanks again Jay for all the help and advice, at least now I know what I need to look for to try and keep costs down and not lose too much performance

TBH I wont think you will ever see a deal on "proper" gaming laptop, you simply can not buy an off the shelf laptop with a top of range graphics card, all are either custom speced clevo units or Alienware.

There are a few off the shelf laptops with upper-mid level cards but they are still low volume sales so finding them (at full price) is difficult.

You might want to consider importing from the states, even after taxes you can save a few hundred quid.

I have had the luxury of being able to buy a few gaming laptops in short time and while they were all great and fantastic; they were all a total waste of money because they pretty much just sit on the same desk their entire lives (you may move it once or twice if you move house).

They are luxury high end products; unless you can afford to waste a lot of money, you are always better off getting a desktop.

Yer I know what you mean about finding a "gaming laptop" in the uk other then the likes of Alienware, but after doing some searching around I have found some laptops that look like they may be upto the standards I need :)

I already have a desktop, if you had read the above posts, you would know this is more for when Im on the move (over friends, on holiday etc) so I have the money to spend on it but would like to get as best a deal as I can :)

So after some research and a lot google searches I have found that the "ATi Radeon HD5870 3D graphics card" is my best option for both price and still being able to get some good gaming out of it.

I found these three laptops (they might not be the cheapest, but I would like peoples opinion on which would be best please):

The asus is a nice laptop but its a like a paving slab, nice as long as you dont have to move it, dont forget to budget a extra 20% on top just in case.

I was considering the GX660R but they sold out before I made up my mind. only downside for me are the silly lights that pulse to whatever music you are playing and the core-5 processor (fine for gaming not fine for the other things I wanted it for)

The GX740 just has a bigger screen, personally id go for the 15 if your carrying it around, although unlike the other 2 I havn't had chance to actually this one.

The price quoted and the lack of details by PC Titan is very very very very very very suspicous, I expect both laptops to retail for 1/3 more than their asking price. Id rather burn the money frankly than deal with them.

The Asus price is believable for me, US import, refurbished and its getting on a bit.
  • Thanks for the reply Rob, I went with the Asus in the end, partly because like you said I didn't think PC Titan looked all that great and I couldn't find much info on them as a company so thought best not to deal with them to be safe (not that I wouldn't be covered by my card if it was fishy but still not worth the hassle if it was).

I know its a slightly bigger screen and more to move around, but that really don't bother me in the slightest :) I think I have picked the best option for what I want the laptop for as I have looked in to reviews on each g-card as well as looking at the benchmark and gaming numbers offered on some sites I know and trust :)

Thanks again for all the help guys, I will post back here when I get the laptop to let you all know how it works out :)
