Brown wasn't stupid, got railroaded into a lot of NHS overcommitment by Blair, ultimately was shafted by his own ego and sense of invulnerability. If he did nothing else, his rules on Euro entry which essentially stopped that possibility despite Blair's inclination to fall into line with the continent, were laudable.

Paragraph one of your post made some good points. Since the crisis, neither the BBC nor the Labour Party have had much input

That's arguable really. When someone is cleaning up a mess, the "input" to the mess is the person who made it, which can't really be anyone other than the party in power since 1997.

And I think the BBC's special correspondents - Peston and Stephanie Flanders - paint respectively an apocalyptic and oversimplified view of the situation as it's been developing which can and does affect confidence. This is trusted mass media and it affects opinion very profoundly.

Agreed - the only positive I'll take from his 'reign' as Chancellor is that he kept us out of the Euro

But where is the fail? - Ed Ball's target audience believe every word of it and love to hear it said. You just need the majority to prefer being told what they would like to hear rather than the truth for it to be an election winning strategy.

Actually I beg to differ. There are large swathes of the population who think we can still spend, spend and then spend some more. This is not only limited to the UK but to Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain as well.

The first line of your earlier post was that the UK government did not cause the World Crisis - does anyone now seriously dispute that it was caused by the mis-management of World Banks?

Neither banks nor governments are very much swayed by public opinion - they are so powerful that they don't have to worry

That does not apply, obviously, at Election Time!

According to Clapton, I am a totally ignorant idiot.
