Sounds utterly bizarre and horrid.
He finally resorted to stabbing himself five times, puncturing a lung, leading his captors to eventually call for an ambulance to the house in Crawley, West Sussex
Sounds a bit stranger still though.

A total of 51 years between them? I read about a guy in the US that broke into some peoples homes and tortured them. He got 500 years.Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0

And automatically eligible for release in half that time. Basically they'll be unlucky to serve a sentence longer than five years apiece.
Yet Charlie Gilmour will serve roughly a year for swinging off of the Cenotaph.
Swinging off the Cenotaph, one fifth as bad as imprisoning and horribly torturing someone.
This has got to change, sentencing in this country is a sick and twisted joke.0 -
Nasty.
I hope that the perpetrators spend the majority of their relatively short jail time fighting off the amourous advances of their fellow prison mates... Generation Rent0 -

I wonder if this could have happened in Scotland with the fit and proper person tests (I assume the criminal scumbags here either acting on behalf of the LL and/or one of them was indeed the LL)?
For those who don't know the test involves examining the following criteria (I've highlighted the ones that might have flagged-up some sort of warning signs with regards to this case).
- Information showing that the landlord has committed fraud, or violent or drug related offences.
- Evidence of discrimination in any business activity.
- Information showing that they have broken any other laws in relation to housing.
- Information showing that they are a bad landlord, or that they have been a bad landlord in the past.
- Antisocial behaviour problems in any properties the landlord rents out or is responsible for.
- If the landlord has an agreement with a letting agent (or anyone else who's acting on their behalf in letting the property), that the terms of that agreement are adequate.
- Anything else which is relevant."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0
