Free kindle books for children

Hi I have difficulty getting my soon to be 9 year old daughter to read, so to try and encourage her I bought a Jacquline Wilson book for her on my kindle which she enjoyed reading, so went to the library to borrow some more and now she won't read them, so it was obviously using the kindle, so have any of you downloaded any free childrens books on the kindle that you think she may be interested in?

Can't comment on the kindle, but my daughter who loves Jacqueline Wilson also loves Cathy Cassidy and the Wimpy Kid books amongst many others.
  • Not exactly an answer to your question, but this site has daily updates about free kindle books emailed to you - there might be some children's books on if you search. I must admit that my 11 year old keeps nabbing my kindle to read the Harry Potter books.

There are lots of free 'classics' if she enjoys that sort of thing.. Alice in Wonderland, Swiss Family Robinson, Tom Sawyer and lots more.. take a look at the Kindle free childrens book in the Amazon Kindle Store..

Obviously books out of copyright tend to be pretty heavy going for children, having a lot of old-fashioned language. My daughter managed to read the E.Nesbit stories, "The Railway Children" and "Five Children and It", but they are the easiest ones we have found. They are on the Project Gutenberg site in Kindle format. I also read "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett to her and she enjoyed them, but I had to explain quite a lot of stuff.

It can't have been just the Kindle as a "gadget" she enjoyed, otherwise she wouldn't have read the whole book. She must have enjoyed the story. I think she's just being picky now..

I would leave a couple of actual (paper) books with her, no pressure to read them. But the Kindle is yours and will only be a treat from now on. Say, she can only use it every second book she reads.

Reading isn't about gadgets, or whatever form the book takes. It's about enjoyment of the written word, being taken to places you never thought you would go to or even dreamed about. Now if she doesn't like reading and only likes the gimmickry of the Kindle, then there isn't much you can do except sit tight and hope she'll come to value the content more than the form some day.

My children have kindles, but were finding it difficult to search for free books on Amazon so I wrote this to help them find books:
(Remember this is only from Young-adults downwards)

They will not let me post links so you will need to cut and paste this to a browser with a www. in front

    hexult.com/books.html

    Or if you love facebook:

If anyone finds this useful and is a more senior member, perhaps they could re-post with the links.

Do they have to be free? Many up-and-coming authors have self-published works for sale for a few pounds.
