Bargain Iceland 3 Night Break £299

Options
Hotel they recommend is quite basic on here for £299, bit like Travelodge according to reviews on Tripadvisor. Personally, I'd go for their option to have the Hotel Leifur fr £319 per person which seems like a better deal with more favourable reviews on Tripadvisor.

Thought I'd post this deal here as I did on HUKD and it seems this thread gets a bit abandoned on MSE or with people posting wrong stuff in this forum

OK, been doing a bit of researching for seperate prices, the flights seperately in March from Manchester are £212.02 per person (they are with Icelandiar but go via Lastminute.com for this price. The Hetel Leifur is £83.09 inc breakfast for 2 for the 3 nights. In total the price for 2 is £507.13 doing it independently where as this package will cost just under £600 if you go through Icelandair and you get free Northern Lights tour which on average costs around £50 per person so this seems a really good deal!! Hope that helps!!

I pondered over this offer yesterday when I got the travelzoo e-mail. Thanks for pricing it independently. Hotel price seems awful cheap though at £83 for a double for 3 nights? I suppose nobody goes to Iceland in March!
  • How do you actually get this deal? I've been thinking of going late October so quite interested - however after getting through to icelandair and looking to book it's telling me it will cost £800?

The price depends on the date you select e.g from my airport I can get the base price departing 27 October for 3 nights but when I clicked on 25 October, the only options were 5 nights and 7 nights which obviously are more expensive. I suppose it depends on the flight schedule.
  • Flights to Manchester leave Friday, return Mondays. To get an idea of availability first, go on Skyscanner or Kayak and view the month you want to go, that should give you an idea of availability, the check prices on Icelandair. If you are struggling with Icelandair prices, you may be able to get it cheaper... as an idea I'm looking in March, cheapest flights via Lastminute.com are £212 each (cheaper than Icelandair) and if I look on hotelscomparison.com, I can get the Hotel Cabin (which I believe is like our Premier Inns) for around £65 for 3 nights which is cheaper than booking with the Hotel Cabin direct or even a YHA hostel). For some reason booking in the UK is cheaper than booking direct with the relevant hotel. Add in the Northern Lights tour seperately with Reykjavik Excursions which is who Icelandair use and this makes the total price around £539 for 2 for the 3 nights, so you can save around £60 doing it all seperate.......

Just an idea, would love to go, but it's so expensive still for 3 nights away.............

Wouldn't recommend the Cabin for a short break because it's in a rather dull commercial area a good way from the city centre. The position of the Leifur, as the OP mentions, is much better. The Hotel Baron's position isn't bad. To the prices people are quoting you need to add the cost of the airport bus.

I've been looking at this one too (as I get the travelzoo email), & it'll cost a lot more if you add all the trips. Not that 3 days would be enough time to do them in. The Cabin's got mixed reviews on tripadvisor, someone calls it Hotel Coffin - is it that small?
  • I think the Hotel Cabin is one of the more basic ones, but then there is the option of getting a different hotel, but for 3 nights you probably aren't going to be spending that long in a hotel. To be fair the reviewer that calls it Hotel Coffin actually goes on to give a balanced review and comments that the would stay there again. Whilst I realise the hotel appears to be pretty basic, to be fair if you were only there for 3 nights, the majority of the time you'd be out!! Here is the review for anyone who was wondering!

“I Affectionately Call It "Hotel Coffin"”

I'll begin by saying that this is a budget hotel. I've stayed there twice, and all things considered, if I go to Reykjavik again, I'll stay there again. It's functional - there are beds and bathrooms, but as far as the rooms go, that's it.
The standard rooms are positively tiny (the pics on the hotel site don't convey how tiny), no wider than two beds and a small desk between them, and not much longer than those beds (hence the Hotel Coffin). Big enough for one person who plans to spend as little time as possible in the hotel room, but two people and their luggage will feel very, very crowded. The beds are standard size, I'm 6'1", and they weren't too short for me. The bathroom is, again, tiny, but functional. Some rooms (the hotel site says 23 of them), have a lovely corridor view, so if you want an actual window to the outside, make sure you request it. Also, the windows of the ground floor rooms don't open, which makes them hard to air. The first room I was in was spotlessly clean. The second, not very much so, but still acceptable (the problem I mentioned with the ground floor windows probably had something to do with the feel). I had towels, in fact, I found a bag with clean ones hanging on my doorknob every morning, so I'm not sure what people are complaining about. The noise level depends on how many school (or such) trips are staying there at the time, but I didn't find it to be a problem.
I can't comment on the deluxe and superior rooms, never been to one of those.
The staff were OK. I don't remember if they were smiling or not, but all my requests were handled quickly and efficiently, so again, I don't know what people are complaining about.
The breakfast buffet is fairly standard and uninspired fair, and if you don't like it, there's a Subway right across the street. The lobby bar is OK, but seriously, there are better places to sit down and have a drink in Reykjavik.
The location is not all that great, it's a 20-30 minutes walk along the ocean to the city centre, so it isn't horrible, either. If the main purpose of your visit is related to the Laugardalur sports centre, then the location is actually quite convenient.
The Cabin is on the list of hotels the airport shuttle bus stops at, so getting from and to Keflavik is no problem at all.
So, in conclusion, it's nothing to be thrilled about, but it's not horrible, either. For a single traveler on a budget who doesn't need more than a bed and a shower (but wants the privacy hostels usually don't offer) I'd say it's one of the top choices.

Yes, I've read them all, I'll change that to mixed reviews ;)
  • Icelandair offered this trip 2010/2011 and I did the advertised Northern Lights tour in January this year. It was definitely worth the money and if you don't see the Northern lights on your first trip they will offer to take you again the next night for free. I stayed in the hotel Leifur Eiriksson which I found perfect considering the cost of the trip. It was simple but clean and the breakfast was good. Staff very helpful. Easy walk from the main shopping/restaurant areas. Lovely place to visit but the coldest I have ever been in my life - take lots of thermals. I booked it all through the Icelandair website. Was pleasently surprised by Icelandair as an airline and the airport in Reykjavik is lovely too. Just beware of the icelandic Schnapps Brenivin :-)

I've wondered what Icelandair was like too. I have visons of the in-flight meal being fish starter, fish main course and for afters, what? Fish on biscuits (as opposed to cheese).

Did you see the Lights? Were you impressed by them?
