just been stung

 Something just flew into my face under my eye and stung me:eek:

No idea what it was but I got the sting out which was about 0.5 inch long and clear coloured, with a tiny clear wing attached.

So obviously not a wasp or bee...anyone got any idea what it could have been?

Got quite dramatic swelling under my eye and it's SORE!!!

This was in the city centre so nothing like horsefly etc.

Anything I can do to stop it hurting? Don't want to bother the doctor!

Take a piriton and keep an eye on it, pardon the pun.

If it doesn't start to go down within about 20 minutes, or gets worse, or you start to feel any other symptoms that might suggest you're having a bad reaction, ring NHS direct or go to A&E.

Some species of wasp have a transparent stinger - there's one wasp which is red in colour and can be found in the UK that fits this description, though I can't recall the name of it off-hand.

TCP can be used to treat some stings, although with it being just under your eye this would likely be undesirable.

How about giving NHS Direct a ring and seeing what they recommend?
  • tbh you would be best going to a doctor as it is close to your eye as obviously and creams/ointments are unsuitable for that area.
Have you got a walk in centre nearby? failing that give nhs direct a ring or pop into a local chemist who can see your eye and give the best advice
If you take anti histamines for allergies/hay fever it may be worth taking one now as that should help a little

Thanks everyone. Ended up going to the walk in centre as my eye and face swelled up so much I couldn't open my eye.

They gave me antihistamines and found some of the sting left in which they removed.

They said it definitely wasn't a bee, wasp or hornet but had no idea what else it could be.

It does feel better now though, thankfully, and if it's not normal tomorrow I'm to go back.
  • ouch, you poor thing.

    This'll make you laugh
My ex once me phoned me at work he'd trodden on a shard of broken glass in the bathroom and was in agony with it stuck right in his foot. What broken glass? I thought, but ok, sometimes something can get tracked in on a shoe? Off he went to A&E. I got home before he did and went to look in the bathroom. Found a very flattened wasp. What a berk. He'd had them cutting into his foot trying to find the 'glass' that was causing him so much pain.
