Insulating a Conservatory Roof

Options
Our polycarbonate conservatory roof looses a lot of heat during the winter and we cannot shut the room off from the main house. Been looking at ways to insulate it cheaply but efficiently.
Looking at getting some bubble insulation for greenhouse from Harrods Horticulture as it seems stronger than normal stuff. Then fixing it under the roof with a few disguised wires and double sided tape and then perhaps disguising underneath with thin material such as voile fabric or gauze. Anybody done this or can offer any other thoughts as how this can be achieved or any other method available to insulate?
Many thanks

Just saw your comment, you might like to take a look at Eclipse Conservatory Roof Insulation on the internet, thinking of having it done myself, looks like they do a tidy job.

    Nice first post
  • The cheapest way is probably going to be to fit the external doors between the conservatory and the house, which are required anyway under Building Regulations.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Conservatory has been built 12 years and doors would cost a fortune :(
  • Somebody just gave me an idea of using white plastic tongue and groove to clad under the existing roof. Anybody come across this idea?

If you use anything solid or non-translucent then your conservatory will cease to be a conservatory and become subject to Building Regulations (which it technically already is as there are no exterior doors between it and the rest of the house). It may also become subject to Planning regulations and require planning permission as an extension.

You cannot turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, nor a conservatory into a habitable room.

I looked into doing something like that but was told it would not retain any heat because there is no insulation value in it, it would just make the roof look white.
  • The conservatory was originally converted from an existing kitchen extension so took up no more of a footprint and also has the original double bricked wall. All that changed was the roof and the windows. No doo existed between the kitchen and the rest of the house. Technically it would be putting a roof back as it was if it was not clear. Was thinking of putting insulation between the cladding and polycarbonate.

have you priced up getting a door set installed -with all the options you are lookign at i don't see it being much more expensive than overcladding a polycarb roof - the simplest options are sometimes the best!
