Does changing the Operating System affect a warranty?

I bought a 2nd hand Dell PC from someone & it came with Windows XP installed. I want to change to a Linux based system.

Does this affect the warranty?

Also, is it easy to change back to Windows XP, if I need to?

How about installing Linux as a dual boot - no problems that way, and you can revert to XP if you want to at any moment

it's not against the warranty but some places like Dell or HP will ask you keep the OS it was supplied with installed when taking it in for repair since it's easier for them.
Though some placed might wipe your drive and install the original image without telling you (had that happen to a few people i know!)

Isn't it out of warranty anyway?

you could do a disk image with maxblast to your seagate drive in case you wish to put xp back on in future

  • Surely no warranty for O/S anyhow, it's only on the Hardware (nb not batteries)

  • In theory an extended warranty could be invalidated by changing OS but it would need to state so in it's T&Cs.

As long as you have the COA for windows (normally on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) it is simple to reinstall windows. I am concerned that you're asking this question though if you're thinking of switching to Linux

As Dell actually sell computers with Linux on, it is daft for them to invalidate the warranty because of it.
