A few years ago when Jamie Oliver was doing his school meals thing it was astonishing how little a class of teenagers could identify. My grandchildren recognise a huge variety but then we do have an allotment and they've been digging spuds and picking peas since they could toddle :)

I couldn't agree more, I think there is likely to be a generation of children who don't know or cant recognise certain food types and where they come from.

I used to be involved in inspecting nurseries and had noticed over the past 5 - 6 years there had been a lot of work done with pre-schoolers to broaden there knowledge of food and get them involved in garden projects right through to cooking and eating the food they have grown. One very rural nursery managed to get some wheat from the neighbouring farmer, ground it down and made their own bread - great stuff.

i often used to buy sharon fruit from our local coop (they dont sell them anymore) and the girl would always put them through as tomatoes, didn't complain coz it worked out cheaper for me

We had a test of naming the fruit and veg. We even had to identify which variety of apple they were as well (with the stickers taken off first!).
  • Nice one Middy, I doubt that I could manage that, especially the likes of Braeburn, Pink Lady and Royal Gala all look pretty similar to me. So I tend to stick to my old recognisable favourites of Red Delicious, Cox's Pippin and Granny Smiths.

In Ireland white turnips are pig food:)

I often see sheep eating turnips. When we pass a field of them I always point out, 'sheeps n neeps!' :p

    I'm easily amused. :o

Just had a look online and apparently our neeps are swedes. Nooo! No-one here calls them swedes - not even the supermarkets! No wonder there's confusion.
